CCL Results week 1:

// Chemical Reaction vs Long John

Why does the spinner have more torque than the lifter? Who knows! What I do know is that at the start of things LJ is on the defensive, and it doesn’t pay off. It gets shoved around for a bit before getting put on the killsaws, which it promptly breaks. This thing is made of adamantine apparently.

LJ is now stuck on top of the stuck up saws, so TBR does the polite thing and turns around and whacks him off of them with his spinner so we don’t have to climb in there and unstick things. We get a reset to neutral, and the two bots face off again. TBR plays it cautious with the wedge, and looks for an opening to angle in to the pointed front of Long John, shoving it towards the arena drums as it flails about, finally getting free just before reaching its destination. LJ tries for a cheeky attack the rear of CR, but it’s still being rather sluggish, and TBR is able to get his bot’s spinner facing. Unfortunately the knockback hits CR into the arena drums, and gets slapped up and almost over, gyrodancing for a bit off of the impact.

Long John decides to push the advantage, and is able to get underneath his opponent and shove it nearish to the working set of saws before TBR regains some amount of control and is able to steer his way off with the bit of tread that’s still touching the ground, giving LJ a parting shot to the side with his spinner that does no damage but does knock the two apart for long enough for him to get the wedge facing his opponent again.

As the fight continues, we see a number of close encounters up against the wall, with long john almost being shoved into the glory hole before it becomes too low into the ground to be a viable OOTA spot any more. It also breaks the second set of saws in the process of doing this. Fuck you. Recovering off of the saws (again getting whacked off by Chemical Reaction. No not like that), long john manages to get under CR and prop it up against the wall, pasting it there for a good 15 seconds of heart-wrenching closeness, before CR is finally able to slip away, now inverted to being right side up, and we get a, inconclusive back-and-forth wedge fight to close things out.

Aggression: 4-1 Chemical Reaction
Damage: 3-2 Long John
Control: 4-1 Chemical Reaction

Your winner, in a 10-5 decision, is CHEMICAL REACTION!

// Ori vs deadshot

This is one of those fights where we get continuous wedgelock, isn’t it. I say as deadshot gets under ori. And fires the hammer immediately, trying to use it as a clamp, it seems. Either that or it broke in one swing. Pat starts trying to push ori in the direction of one of the killsaws before HFL’s able to break free with a series of hard-to-follow j-turns. They re-engage, and as they do so deadshot’s bounced up by the impact of their two wedges hitting, which gives Ori enough time to get under and fire off a flip just as DS fires its hammer, causing the hammerbot to do a graceful 360, landing right side up a few feet away.

DS stays where it is, pat apparently comfortable with his positioning now. This gives HFL a bit more space to work with, and he tries engaging closer to the corners of deadshot. It works to his advantage, as the hammerbot has some among of trouble keeping up. Pat still tries to fire the hammer as ori gets under to disrupt the approach, but ends up falling on his side due to the momentum of the turn, giving ori a free flip. HFL’s able to chain in another flip before Deadshot’s frantic flopping gets its front facing its foe once more.

There’s a lot of back and forth as the fight goes on - deadshot getting ori into the drums at one point, and deadshot just barely - and I mean barely staying in the arena after an OOTA attempt. The big story of these engagements though is that while deadshot is mostly using its hammer for control (and not really succeeding at it), Ori’s weapon is consistently getting HFL value throughout the fight. Deadshot’s poor control rears its head a few times, but overall pat does a good job of keeping it in check, especially considering how often he’s in the air or upside-down.

Aggression: 4-1 Ori
Damage: 3-2 Deadshot
Control: 3-2 Ori
Your winner, in a 9-6 decision, is ORI!

// Death Metal vs Benjiro

Honestly this one's kind of a done deal just from looking at the stat sheet, but maybe Colon can pull it back, who knows?

Death Metal kicks off by beginning to spin up, whilst Benjiro attempts a box rush. Benji is actually able to get under DM, but the Tombclone's bar impacts on Benji's own arm, atomizing it. This is looking pretty bad, but it has managed to stop DM's spinner for a moment, so it all comes down to if Benji can properly use this chance. Benji is quicker to recover than DM, slamming it towards the drums, but not quite being able to angle it enough, settling for a corner-stuffing instead. With a bit of finagling, DM is eventually caught out by the drums, thrown over... but far enough away to build up some speed in its spinner by the time they meet once more. The second hit is enough to split a track, and the third, finally able to get up to full power, bisects the multitool bot. A little longer of a spat than Shaba would've liked, but a victory nonetheless.

Death Metal wins by KO in 1:14.

// Apierogon vs Diablo Victus

GREETINGS! I come to you from the surface of the sun! Something something robots grinding noise as they engage, and diablo backs off. They engage, grinding noise, diablo backs off. Apierogon still hasn’t moved from the position it’s taken back up against the OOTA wall, for whatever reason. They engage, diablo gets under, flippy floppy and AP lands on its side. It then gets bullied for a bit, until it’s finally able to get on wheels long enough to do threatening gyrodances and force neutral.

They engage, and diablo gets bopped back by AP. They reengage, diablo gets under, and does some flip bullying again, this time into a drum that munches on AP, fucking up the supports on the topside of the weapon housing as it also loses a few bits of wheel plastic. It eventually gets off, gets chased a bit longer. Ys tries to use clever strafing to get DV off their ass, but Drew’s able to use some even more clever predictions to stay on, which forces ys to swing the weapon over the top at DV to make some space. If nothing else drew seems surprised, and AP is back on the run. It can’t last forever though, and diablo’s able to catch up to the vertical spinner and huck it into some psycho exs as it flails about with its arm again.

Ys seems to not be that perturbed by the situation, even as their bot lose yet more bits off the wheels. they try and strafe out of that area to line up a hit towards the much lower OOTA wall, but Diablo’s already moving out of the way.

The fight ends much more even. Diablo tries to set up a clamp - to - OOTA attempt, but doing so involves him setting down his opponent, who just… drives away. Ys for their part stays away from the OOTA as it goes lower, but does get DV cornered against a wall. There’s some excellent grinding noises and sparks, but no functional damage.

Aggression: 3-2 Diablo Victus
Damage: 3-2 Diablo Victus
Control: 3-2 Diablo Victus

Your winner, in a 9-6 decision, is Diablo Victus!

fights are due FRIDAY, june 25th, 11:59 EST. the real deadline is when we write them, but dont play with fire. as always, on Razor's edge.

Fights this week //

// Split Personality vs Ori

Yo fuck fireworks. All my homies hate making the air unbreathable for the next 4 days for no reason. I’d write something funny and fanservicely long if I didn’t have that to use as a convenient excuse :heck:

Really though this is just a mismatch of robot tiers. Split personality is here to look funny as it gets carted about the arena and maybe cheese some wins out of unprepared people. Ori is not unprepared, and gives the poor trapezoidal contraption the full run of wall drums, psycho exes, and comical failed OOTA attempts before finally getting the bot teetering on the very edge of the wall, shaking back and forth, before sealing its own demise with the flailing of its hammer.

Your winner, by KO in 2:34, is ORI!

// The Boy Sprout vs Chemical Reaction

Oh god it's this stupid thing. Boy Sprout attempts to move out of the starting area, but finds itself uselessly skidding as Chemical Reaction gets up to speed. ChemRe manages to get a good punt off, yeeting Boy Sprout across the ring like, well, a pinball. Mayfly attempts to recover, but with a -13 speed-traction differential, that's not really possible, ever. After a few more minutes of punting Sprout around the ring, ChemRe manages to get a good enough angle for the ball to bounce out entirely.

Chemical Reaction wins by OotA in 2:09.

// Benjuro vs Deadshot

I’m hanging you both upside down by your toenails for writing these in two separate posts. Also this thing’s name was spelt wrong in the write card. What a dumbass *checks card* …I… must be.

Also if you’re going to have very dense complex stats with multiple weapons, remember to uh, tell the writer what config you’re using. It doesn’t count towards word limit! The bots are off and doing bot stuff. It appears as though benjuro has elected to try and hit deadshot’s hammer. That does seem to be the best use of a spinner on a lifting arm, can’t really argue with that tbh. It’s not really doing a lot of damage, per say, but it’s doing a lot of smacking them apart again and again. Problem is benjiro is actually slowly losing ground: it’s taking longer to recover from its shots because its weight is unevenly distributed.

It doesn’t really start to become something to think about for colon until about a minute into the fight. Deadshot’s gotten in a few sparring hits here and there, catching mostly lifter or lifter support. Neither bot seems to be easy to control (because every ARC member is a perfect driver, as we all know, and would only be driving poorly if their bot was hard to control), which means it’s the same as if both bots had perfect control. Sometimes Deadshot outflanks Benjiro, and often Benjiro’s able to swing around the spinner to mitigate most of the danger of the swing coming in from deadshot. As Benjiro gets pushed into the corner though Deadshot finally hits paydirt, finding a tread in the half second or so it takes Colon to recover from a bit of understeer.

It does get severed immediately, but doesn’t spell game over for Benjiro since it has 2 sets of track per side. Its job is a lot harder though for the rest of the match, and the damage of the continued hits that he was trying to get just aren’t coming in. he tries to go for some more lifter oriented plays later on, but is not rewarded. Deadshot does succeed a lot more often in the second half of the match, but never does get a second shot on the treads before time expires.

Aggression: 3-2 Deadshot
Damage: 3-2 Deadshot
Control: 3-2 Benjiro

Your winner, in an 8-7 split decision, is DEADSHOT!

// Apeirogon vs Long John

Drifty spinner vs invincible brick with a pokey thing on it. This sure is going to be a thing.

Apeirogon gets moving, slip-sliding across the ring and spinning up to a notably quiet death-hum, whilst Long John attempts a box rush. Naturally, this doesn't quite go well, leaving the flipper struggling to turn as the spinner broadsides it, rolling it clean over, and following up with a second punt into the Wild Flings, managing to roll the flipper right-side up. Apeirogon is able to get back in before Long John could turn to face it, punting it back into the drums, before drifting around to the far side of the bot as it lands, repositioning to line up for an OotA, that death-hum coming in full force as Long John is chain-struck towards the far wall, the final strike sending it toppling over the top.

Apeirogon wins by KO in 0:48.

CCL Results Week 3

// Ori vs Diablo Victus

FF for Ori. Heard Diablo’s having some serious issues with its flipper mechanism in the pits, and want to spend the extra time figuring it out.

// Chemical Reaction vs Death Metal

Huh, TBR actually wants to take the weapon duel. Let’s see how this goes

CRASH THUDUNKDUNK

Let’s still see if he wants to take the half of his weapon that’s left versus Death Metal. It appears as though he will go in for some more, and lines up the best hit he can with the half of the disc that isn’t embedded into the OOTA wall, and it goes about as poorly as the first time. Death metal is doing some remarkable acrobatics off the second hit, though, and that allows Chemical Reaction to do a bit of shoving and pushing before DM lands an incidental shot to the back of the bot as it’s getting back down on two wheels that leaves a very nasty gouge and separates the two. With Death Metal getting back up to You’re Going To Die speeds and Chemical Reaction still looking at the possibility of a run in the losers’ bracket, TBR wisely taps out to avoid further damage.

Your winner, by KO in 0:47, is Death Metal!

// The Boy Sprout vs Deadshot

It appears as though Boy Sprout’s main goal is to drive… somewhere? It’s kinda hard to tell where it’s trying to go as it keep skittering and going off in who knows what direction every time. Pat’s doing his best to shove it into walls, but tbh this is mostly just Boy Sprout running away from Deadshot for 3 minutes straight

Aggression: 5-0 Deadshot
Damage: 3-2 Deadshot
Control: 5-0 Deadshot

Your Winner, in a 13-2 decision, is Deadshot!

// Split Personality vs Apierogon

FF for Apierogon. Split Personality appears to be completely in twain in the pits still, and it's certainly not getting back together in the next 5 minutes.

CCL Results Week 4

// Ori vs Death Metal

Both drivers are eying each other as we get to the box here. both know how close this fight will be. for Death Metal, this is a battle of attrition and space: if she's able to get that bot up to speed enough, Ori will take serious damage from one of the hits eventually. HFL knows this, and knows his bot's limits, and will really have to focus on getting value out of his engagements as the fight goes on. as the lights count down and both drivers focus in, we leave things to fate.

Ori rushes, than slows, not fully confident he can keep up with where Death Metal is going. Shaba seems to know that he's going to do that though, and takes the time to get fully up to speed in her square, avoiding any gyro shenanigans before she gets moving. and thus, we enter the staredown portion of the match. Ori advances, DM sweeps back and to the side, Ori advances again, DM gets a bit aggressive, and Ori backs off. Ori advances - but it's a fake! HFL just hit the throttle for a moment, but it's enough to bait out the counter-move from Shaba! DM's drive can be a bit curmudgeonly at times, making it dangerous for her to not take every action of Ori's seriously. Ori's able to take the blade cleanly to its front. still a hell of a SMASH, but it's just a lot of noise and sparks. there's a few more smashes, bangs, and crashes, and DM's on the back foot for well more than half a minute before it finally is able to wiggle free enough to fully spin back up, some very impressive defensive driving keeping it from hazards (but not from doing some quite impressive acrobatics after being slammed into walls).

and now Death Metal's showing its wheels. was wondering when she'd try that trick. despite not facing the massive spinning hunk of metal directly towards its opponent, this is when DM is at is most dangerous: HFL is forced to still try to target the weapon, knowing that it could come swinging around at any point. time it wrong, lose a wheel. there's basically the same staredown as last time, except death metal's doing it by tauting with its rear. This time HFL's more passive with the baits, seemingly trying to make DM feel forced to engage. Shaba turns the bot full frontal to menace her opponent back into action, backing him up for a bit before they give each other space again, and she goes back to trying to show her wheel -

and in that instant Ori strikes, trying to catch her in transition. Shaba's still able to swing around the bot, but Ori is ready for it, her movement telegraphed, really only able to quickly turn in one direction because of how massively powerful DM's weapon is. It' still a pretty strong setup for her though, the weapon catching near enough to the edge of the plow to kinda wrap behind, letting off a strange noise and some clattering about the arena, indicating that part of Ori is no longer attached to Ori - a bit of plow, it seems. Oooh man that gash is inches from that front wheel. still, that's a new corner on the edge of the wedge for Ori to worry about.

Death Metal's able to get in one other good solid hit in the second minute, catching on the gap between Ori's flipper and its wedge, bending the flipper arm up a bit. It's hard from my position to tell if the weapon's still functional. or at least it's hard for me to tell until HFL is finally able to tame Death Metal's weapon to a low enough speed for him to be comfortable firing the thing, giving us our first flip of the match. it's frankly underwhelming, not even quite flipping the bot, but it still helps him snowball DM's disadvantaged state into the final minute of the match.

Ori's still chasing DM, the spinner now not only not at full speed, but also trapped close to the now much lower OOTA wall. Shaba tries more feints - she oversteers, losing more ground. she tries sudden aggression: even with her bar not in the Death Hum Zone, it's still dangerous to the wheels of Ori, but HFL is ready, taking the hit on the plow. Ori's lining up the shot now, Death Metal on its wedge as it approaches the OOTA wall. Shaba tries one last manuever, one last trick to get herself off the wedge and back into the fight. But it's too late: her wheels spin on air, the flipper fires, and Death Metal is gracefully ejected from the arena.

Your winner, by OOTA in 2:23, is ORI!

(usually I keep the d20 rolls I use to decide things secret, but I was quite fascinated by the final paragraph's dice rolls - low is in favor of Ori: 5 / 4 / 4 / 1)

// Diablo Victus vs Deadshot

FF for Deadshot. Every time they fixed an issue on diablo they found 2 more, ad inifinitum. like some sort of repair based hydra.

// Chemical Reaction vs Apierogon II

IDK how Apeirogon wasn't able to show up to this one to be honest. maybe YS just went out and got super drunk or something.

CCL Results Week 5

// Deadshot vs Chemical Reaction

[insert funny and/or clever intro here]

[insert unfunny and awkward transition here]. Both bots move to center arena, but Deadshot gives some space as they start to get close to one another and CR gets its weapon up to full speed. Once up to full speed, TBR wastes no time in getting into the action - SLAM - that’s a big old hammer hit right there! You can see a very noticeable puncture in the top of the bot, and the disc is already making a horrible grinding noise as the bot gets back up to speed after doing a bit of “ow my disc hit the floor” dancing.

TBR’s a bit more cautious in the approach this time, trying to get more around the sides of deadshot now that he’s fully aware of its reach. Forcing the hammerbot to turn ends up paying off eventually - there’s only so much ground pat can give up, and only so many times he can get his bot to steer correctly, before Chemical reaction is finally able to get in and deliver a few good grinding hits to the side of Deadshot, making some noises and munching at some tire bits before the hammerbot gets the hell outta dodge.

Deadshot’s able to more or less retake center stage here, but once again Chemical Reaction’s avoiding the aggressive head-on approach in favor of a weaving attack, waiting for deadshot to show - SLAM! - what on earth? Pat just yoloed a shot there like the Force was guiding his hand, and it somehow connects! Chemical Reaction is dead in the water instantly. That was one of those moves that you mock forever if it doesn’t work but man, it did work, and it really was quite something.

Congrats to both bots for making it this far, but your winner, headed to Losers’ Bracket finals to take on Death Metal is DEADSHOT!

It's

The

Mother

Fuckin

FINALS RESULTS CARD BABY!! WE MADE IT! WAHAHAHA!

// Ori vs Death Metal

It’s times like this I really wish I was capable of creating hype via text. It’s so much easier to do in person, yknow? You get that slowly rising in intensity voice, the overdramatic and drawn out intros, you start building off the frenzy of the crowd, and before you know it you’re all worked into a froth-mouthed frenzy over… whatever it is we were about to do.

Alas, I have no vocal tone to work with. Well, I could use bolds and italics. Been liking that less lately though… Alex was better at that sort of thing than I ever was. But you’re here for robots, not for my rambling about the differences between face to face and digital text conversation. There’s a lot less jostling for position this time, with Death metal going more aggressive than I expected - she stated in the pre-match interview that she wanted to camp the glory hole (oWo), and it’s on the opposite end. This means she has to take Ori aggressively, and use the space made with that engagement to move to the position. Unfortunately, she can’t quite manage to get there cleanly, and gets chased around for a bit for her troubles. Ori’s not able to get cleanly underneath death metal for quite a while until it finally does, getting a nice flip into the psycho exes.

They munch on Death Metal for a bit, but the bot gets free of them - but not ori, as HFL continues to harass DM around the arena. We’re about a minute into things now, and Death Metal is finally starting to get to that death hum - and she spins around, catching a corner of ori’s front! Doesn’t appear to have done much damage, and you can *hear* why, as the blade continues to spin faster and faster into the full whine of a fully on weapon.

Damage or no, they’re separated at this point, and Ori will have to approach things a bit more carefully. As it fends off approaches from Ori, DM appears to be trying to get across the arena, shimmying across as it gives Ori love taps and nicks on the wedge. Nothing major yet though, and eventually a driving slipup lets ori get underneath DM near the center of the arena, knocking the blade up and sending the bot flying above the top of ori in a remarkably cinematic jump. DM sticks the landing, though im sure everything inside’s gotten a nice rattling.

And for the next minute, it’s just a full out fucking brawl. HFL’s starting to get into a proper rhythm with Ori now - Shaba’s pulling a lot less funky maneuvers compared to last time, and the lack of them has made him bolder about taking more - and more aggressive - interactions. Death Metal seems to mostly be fighting to get to a corner on the far side from the OOTA wall - Ori of course would like an OOTA, and is trying to herd her the opposite direction. Repeated gashes in the same general area has made the right side of Ori’s wedge swiss cheese, but Death Metal is not achieving its positioning goal, and is starting to get dangerously close to OOTA territory. Ori’s finally able to get underneath DM properly, leaving the bot with only one wheel on the ground, it’s enough for her to steer herself away from the low edge, and this time the flip attempt just misses its target.

Death metal starts running once more, slowly gaining the space to spin up again. It seems like it’s spinning the opposite way this time. Ori gets to bully for quite a bit longer, and it’s the last 30 seconds before Death Metal can get space again. They meet once more, and this time, the hit’s a doozy. DM once again hits the swiss cheese size of ori, and it wrenches the entire front wedge down at a terrible angle, as Death metal goes flying. Quite a few shock mounts are showing over the wrenched wedge, and it looks like Ori’s propped up on just its left rear wheel - and a bit of traction from the front one as well. HFL starts frantically firing the flipper, unable to get free. Death Metal has recovered from its recoil tantrums and comes over to further menace its prey, forcing Ori to defend.

The judges seem to be exchanging a bit of conversation, and finally the call goes out to Ori to show controlled movement - crabbing don’t cut it, and the countdown starts. With 9 seconds remaining. Shaba notices this in the last few seconds, and straight charges a motherfucker, sending Ori flying into the drums a second before time is called. Was that rapid change in momentum enough to flip it in her favor?? Let’s ask the judges after this commercial break!

And we’re back! The scorecard is in, and your winner, of the first tournament I’ve successfully completed in two years is…….

DEATH METAL!!!!

Aggression: 3-2 Ori
Damage: 4-1 Death Metal
Control: 3-2 Ori
