ARC: Anachronistically Rifled Cavemen

Post by Madman » Thu Dec 03, 2020 1:40 am

You Wake Up...

It's a hot, muggy day. The sun is directly overhead, peering through a thin veil of clouds. You blink and shield your eyes, unless you're a particularly dumb individual. This is entirely possible since you're a caveman. You don't know what a caveman is, of course. You've been plucked straight out of the Pleistocene and have no such context. Maybe you're a sapiens, neanderthalensis, denisova, floresiensis, or erectus but, either way, you're a homo.

Regardless of where you fall on the evolutionary (or autism) spectrum, you quickly notice that your head kills and the air feels... weird to breathe. Then, you see a dragonfly land on a large, unfamiliar plant nearby. It is easily the largest dragonfly that you have ever seen. It's as long as your freakin' arm! The next thing that you notice are the people around you. Some look like the kind you're used to seeing, but others look... different. They're people, but nothing like you. You're all on a beach, just out of reach of the waves and across from a large mainland with thick, verdant jungle. There must be dozens of you. Do you introduce yourself? Maybe look for familiar faces? Allies? Members of your own kind? Should you explore your surroundings? Ooooh! What's that shiny thing lodged in the ground beside that strange tree?

This is a casual RPG. Take it as seriously as you want to, which can be 'very' or 'not at all'. Make multiple characters, NPC them whenever you want, and pick them up whenever you want. They may die, though. You've been transported to the Cretaceous period. Life is rough - even rougher than it was during the Pleistocene, which is where you're from. In an OOC spoiler, please give your character's name, age, sex, and species. Then play. Jump right in. That's all! Good luck surviving.

Ee'rah
Name: Ee'rah
Age: 17
Sex: female
Species: Neanderthal
Background: Ee'rah is her clan's designated smart person. She even made a thing that rolls once, but nobody could see any use for it, so she went back to picking bugs out of her mother's hair. Technically, she's a pretty good hunter and an excellent gatherer, but she's such a wuss by Neanderthal standards. Spending all that time studying the way that seeds are carried on the wind, watching crabs instead of eating them, drawing silly pictures on cave walls... sigh.
Ee'rah sits up and rubs at her temples. She takes herself in. She is uninjured, aside from a light headache. She fixes her clothes so they cover more of her legs. There are many men here. Some of them look barbaric. At least her bleeding time is over. Thank the Sun for that. She blinks. It is right above her. She makes the Sun-sign in thanks, but it is hot. Ee'rah cannot remember such a hot day in all her seventeen summers. The plants are strange. The people are strange. She sees one other of her kind nearby: a man, a bit older than her. She gets to her feet and scrambles back from the water. She does not want to waste time drying off. She's just decided to go to him and try to communicate when a colossal bug - a long-tail fly - as big as her arm lands beside her. Ee'rah's face turns even more ashen than it usually is. She lets out a yelp and runs for the cover of some large rocks.

Oop
Name: Oop!
Age: 20
Sex: male
Species: Floresiensis
Background: Oop is the biggest klutz in his clan. It's frankly amazing to the others that he hasn't been seriously injured or eaten by a Komodo Dragon yet. It's not so much that he's lacking in coordination. He's quite capable. He just... isn't careful. He rushes things. He plays tricks. He's WAY too full of enthusiasm. He also really wants a mate. Like... really. He's already twenty and hasn't had a single child. When are you gonna clean up your act and stop chasing shiny things, Oop?
Oop sees something shiny near a tree! Oop runs for it as fast as he can, shouting excitedly. Shiny things are fun things. Oop likes fun.

Lurk
Name: Lurki Lurki
Age: 18
Sex: female
Species: Denisovan
Background: Lurk is shy. The men in her clan universally agree that this is a shame, because she's drop-dead gorgeous (by, caveman standards). She's also really quick, good at hiding, and has excellent hand-eye coordination. She's an amazing hunter but it's also seriously annoying when she pops up behind you while you were eating or taking a shit or whatever and you didn't even know she was there. It makes you jump and mess up what you were doing. Seriously, Lurk, stop!
Lurk realizes that she is in some strange place. There is a lot of water. Thankfully, there is also a lot of cover. The moment that a tiny crazy man runs out of the trees making monkey noises is the moment that she decides to pack it in. A strange-looking girl with bright red hair rushes past her, running from a very large long-tail. It is a bug. Lurk isn't hungry - she's too alarmed right now - but she knows that she will be. She grabs a piece of driftwood and goes after the flying food.

Puck
Name: Fuck (Puck)
Age: 23
Sex: male
Species: Erectus
Background: Puck (pronounced more like 'Fuck' in his regional proto-language) is the biggest guy in his clan. He has muscles, and scars, and a manly countenance that everyone loves. He has made many children. He has killed many large and ferocious creatures. He is leader of his clan in all but name. Everyone listens to Puck and, if they don't, he can hurt them until they do. That's rarely necessary, though. After all, he's better than them and they know it.
Puck bolts to his feet. He is very mad. This place is strange. A little like home. Also different. These people are strange. Some are too small. He wants to squish them. Some have strange hair. He wants to pull it. Some have strange skin. He... doesn't knwo what to do with that. A bug flies by. It is too big for his liking. There are at least two women he wants to make babies with. Possibly more. The bug is large, but no other large animals he can see. He finds a piece of wood and picks it up. "Where this!?" he shouts. "Where Puck!? How get here!?"

Nope
Name: Nope
Age: 25
Sex: female
Species: Sapiens
Background: Nope doesn't take shit from anyone. If you tell her what to do, she'll usually do the opposite, just to spite you. This may or may not be why she's been kicked out of three clans and is currently living sorta-kinda on her own. She makes good weapons, though, and beautiful jewellery, so someone always lets her back in. She has a dog and a sledge and two extra outfits. She has many shiny things from the land and from the sea, and many painting things too. People give her food and let her stay if she trades them. What suckers.
Nope wakes up in some weird-ass place. It's humid and hot and she scrambles back from the waves breaking at her feet. Nope. She doesn't feel like getting wet. She looks around frantically. Her sledge and Yep are missing. Shit! She likes Yep. He's warm and soft and guards her at night. That sledge had lots of shinies she could trade. Nope notices that there are stockies here: the light and dark kinds. Most of her people don't even know that they exist, but Nope does. There are other people too. A huge, strange-looking man bellows in a language that she doesn't understand and, yet, somehow, she does. A tiny ape-man runs into the trees, hollering unintelligibly. She twists to see why and that's when she sees them: SHINIES. Nope barrels into the trees after the tiny ape-man. Maybe he'll be a useful idiot. If not, she'll crack him over the head with a stone and be done with it.

O'ko
Name: O'ko
Age: 19
Sex: Male
Species: Erectus
Background: O'ko is a coward. Scary things cause him to freak out, like when his brother put a big spider on his arm as a joke and he ran screaming into a tree. He just wanted to live a peaceful life, gathering roots and berries and hunting small furry animals; none of those big mammals the rest of his tribe hunted. But now he's here.
O'ko wakes up and scratches himself, yawning. Then freezes. He's seen the dragonfly. He leaps to his feet in instant fight-or-flight. His panicked hyperventilating is exacerbated by the high oxygen content of the air, causing him to black out after about ten seconds. He lands face-first in the dirt. It's not the first time he's done this.

The first twenty seconds are chaos. I mean... what did you expect when dropping 42 paleolithic hominims on a remote tropical island in the Cretaceous period and giving them access to assorted Holocene tech? If you understood that, BTW, you're a nerd. There's no shame here, though. This is a nonjudgmental space.

The dragonfly is a particular source of insanity. O'ko literally faints when he sees it. Ee'rah runs for her life, secretly thanking the Cave Bear God that there is someone else here even more cowardly than her. Lurk knows no fear. She grabs a piece of driftwood and chases it down. Brick... watches it with a strange sort of fascination. Lurk nearly shoves him out of the way, stopped only by her existential fear of physical contact with other people. She literally leaps the fallen O'ko in her relentless pursuit.

Meanwhile, Ren, Grug, and First are a bit more reserved in their initial reactions. Others, however, have noticed the shinies. Oop and Nope race for the trees, followed by a gaggle of assorted hominims. Nope is first to arrive and she picks up the strangest object that she's ever seen. It has a natural hand grip. She supposes it's made by people, but it's heavy and shiny and has a long, hollowed-out tube, like a tiny bamboo shoot. She stares down the tube, squinting into it, and notices a little tab that she can push with her finger. She wonders if she should push it. A few of those idiot tiny ape-men are hovering nearby. One has grabbed another one of the strange tubes, though his is much longer. He places his mouth around the end of the tube and Nope's eyes widen. Maybe he's onto something. Maybe there's food that can be sucked from there! Maybe you push the little tab. Nope's not about to be anyone's sucker, though. "Push it!" she tries, not sure if the tiny ape-man will understand her, but trying to be encouraging with her body language. He glances suspiciously her way, and then, with a happy little hoot, pulls the trigger.

BAM!!!

It is one of the loudest, suddenest sounds that Nope has ever heard. She scrambles backward, dropping her tube-thing. The little ape-man's head is gone. Bits of his brain decorate her clothes and the surrounding area. Nope screams. The other little ape-men scatter, hooting and hollering in terror. The red-haired and the dark-haired stocky girls running from and after the dragonfly dive behind some rocks. Odd-looking birds scatter in fear, but a large, strange-looking man quickly takes an interest after his initial fright, stalking forward while all the others run back.

Lurk, meanwhile, hiding behind her boulder with the red-haired girl, is the first to spot it, her eyes following the... birds as they flutter upwards. Something colossal blots out the sun overhead, casting a terrifying shadow. It is the size of a mammoth, but it is flying. Effortlessly, the great beast snatches a panicked bird from the air, snapping it like a twig and choking it down in a single bite. Where is she!? What is going on!?

((OOC - yes, it's a motherfuckin' Quetzalcoatlus))

Brick hears the loud noise and immediately runs towards it, soon he sees a bunch of shinnies, several cavemen around them in a circle and some guy taking a nap. Brick manages to communicate with a caveman that the stick shiny next to the sleeping guy made the loud noise and in then he quickly goes and grabs a similar looking shiny without doubting it.
Hue hue hue, Brick has boomstick

Meanwhile Ren gets really scared of the loud noise, after the shock more or less ends she does walk to the area and starts to carefully analyze the shinnies that she finds on the floor, maybe one of them made the noise. She luckily does not blow her head out like the other guy.

Grug stand on beach and look around with hands on hips. Grug survey scenery. Grug has not seen any of these plants before. Grug has never seen any of these people before. Grug has definitely never been on this particular beach before. Grug consider this beach major improvement on beaches Grug seen before. Breeze warmer and water bluer.

Then Grug see giant bug. This bug is the size of raven. Grug briefly consider that he has become very small, but waves not that big and nobody else small either. Well, some people small, but not bug small. That means bug really that big, but no bug ever that big.

Grug make mental note to avoid pink spotted mushroom in future.

A red hair girl see Grug. She walks towards him. Uh oh. Grug unsure what to do in this situation. Girls not normally talk to Grug. Then red haired girl see giant bug. She scream and run away. Strange looking hairy man see bug too. He run and pass out.

"What bunch of pussies," Grug mutter to self. Then Grug realize that if they also see giant bug, then either Grug really fucking high right now or giant bug real. Uh oh.

Then there really big boom, like lightning very close. Grug startled. Grug perform dramatic leap away from noise and fall on ass. Hmm... big storm here. Bad idea to be on beach. But Grug see no storm clouds. It not feel like storm. Grug confused, until he see many people gather round.

One tiny man is dead. His head is gone. Blood everywhere. Rock must have fallen on him, but no cliffs. Also no rock. There are clubs and a smell like burning yellow rock. Smoke is coming out of one club, on the end, but it does not look like wood. It is dark and shiny, like stone. Whoever make club is idiot. He make handle of stone and hitting part of wood. Still not even idiot should be able to set rock on fire.

Another man pick up a club, so Grug pick up one too to look clever. Yes, it is stone, and heavier than should be. Handle is very round and smooth - but end of it is hollow, like blowpipe! Grug look in handle. Someone look scared and start shouting words Grug not understand. Grug remember smoke come out of handle of club with blood on it. Right. Grug turn club other way. Grug's beard look bad enough without singed hair. Plants look wet, not easy to burn, but cannot be too careful. Grug take strange club back onto beach and turn it so hollow end point at ground. Grug shake club up and down to see if anything fall out.

O'ko is awakened once again by a loud clap of thunder. He finds thunder terrifying, but looking up, he doesn't see any rain clouds. He does, however, see a giant bird monster devouring a smaller bird. This is just too much. O'ko snaps, lets out a piercing shriek, then runs yelling as fast as he can. The fact that he's running right towards the giant bird monster doesn't even cross his mind.

Oop

Oop is dead. Very dead. Oop suppose had decent life. End strange way, though. Really, Oop have no last thought. Oop's brain go splat too fast. Goodbye, Oop. Was nice know you.

Oop's current arsenal: none. He's dead.

Nope and Ren

There are lots of Stockies here, light and dark ones, big hairy people too, and little ape-men. Well, one less little ape-man now. This is why Nope lets other people take the risks for her. She's in the process of looking at the... she decides to call it a bang-club when more people start to arrive. First are two big men - One's a Stocky, the dark kind. The other is one of those strange hairy ones. They both pick up the biggest, baddest bang-clubs they can find and, after a bit of what she supposes passes for communication in their two species, grin at each other. "Boom!" shouts the hairy one. "Haha!" He points the hollow end at some of the tiny ape-men, who scurry into the bushes, instinctively grouping up.

Next is a Light Stocky. He picks up a bang-club, examining it closely, before walking back towards the beach with it. The eyes of at least one of the other two men follow him for a moment. Of more interest to Nope, however, is a woman of her own species who, after carefully inspecting a number of Bam-clubs thoughtfully, selects one and picks it up. Judging by her clothes, she might be from an area pretty close to Nope's, and Nope knows a few words from other places anyway. She takes a deep breath, and in the simplest way that she can, tries to introduce herself. "Hi," she says. "I'm Nope." She points to herself. "Can you understand me?"

Nope's current arsenal: Glock 29 pistol

Ren's current arsenal: Kel-Tec PMR 30 pistol

Puck and Brick

Puck must get a boomstick. He needs it. He thinks of all he can kill with it. This is a strange place. He cannot think how he got here. He does not even try. He sees a very big, scary flying thing, though. If he has a boomstick, he can hit it. Boomsticks seem... stronger than spears. Puck is not dumb, though. He looks for the longest boomstick he can find. He sees other people take short boomsticks. Dumb. Very dumb. You want more space between you and the thing you kill, obviously. There is another man there. He's short but big. Dark skin. Muscles. A hunter like Puck. He talks and gestures. Puck doesn't understand. His words are long and fast and strange.

He understands soon, though. He points to a boomstick. He shouts "boom!" He mimics a head going boom and laughs. The short man understands. Puck thinks he thanks him. He takes a boomstick. Puck takes a boomstick. The tiny ape-men look out from bushes nearby. Puck raises his boomstick, careful to point the hole end at them and they run away. Puck holds his boomstick tightly. He grins at the short man. The boomstick makes him feel powerful.

Puck's current arsenal: Mauser M98 Magnum rifle

Brick's current arsenal: CZ 550 Safari Magnum rifle

Grug and First

People are picking up the strange clubs everywhere Grug looks. He is more concerned with his own. There are little shiny things that remind him a little bit of loose animal teeth on the ground, but they are also heavy stone. The red-haired girl and her strange, dark friend glance at him as they head for the trees. A skinny man sits on the beach, surprisingly relaxed despite all the chaos around him, and watches as Grug shakes the strange club. He does not hear much. There is a faint rattle, like there are little pieces inside, but they are not loose, like stones in a bag or basket. The slight rattle comes from a big lump on the club. It curves from one side like a blunt horn, though the end is square. Grug looks up, pondering. The waves roll in and out. There are shells like he has never seen, washed up on the sand. He looks along the beach's length and notices something else in the distance, close to the skinny quiet man. It looks like wood, but is shaped like an upside-down turtle shell or half of a clam. It is quite large - enough to carry a few people. Two long sticks rest against its sides. They widen at the ends, and are flat.

Grug's current arsenal: AK-47 semiautomatic rifle

First's current arsenal: none

Ee'rah, Lurk, and O'ko

Ee'rah sees the tiny man turn his head into little pieces with that... boom-stick, she decides to call it for now. The loud noise scares the big bug away, only for things to get much worse. The dark-skin girl beside her, roughly the same age as her, points up and begins shouting. Ee'rah doesn't understand a word that's coming out of her mouth, but she understands pointing and panicking. There is something in the sky. It flies like a bird but is not a bird. After a moment of trying to make sense of it, it dawns upon Ee'rah that this thing is enormous. Her heart starts beating faster. "Come!" she urges, gesturing at the strange girl. "Come on. Follow me!" If a boom-stick can turn someone's head into pieces, Ee'rah is pretty sure it can do something to a mammoth-sized animal too. Maybe less, she concedes, but still hurt it. Ee'rah passes the man like her. He's standing on the beach, shaking a boom-stick. She glances at him, but doesn't bother with more. She needs to get to cover, but she also needs a boom-stick of her own.

Lurk sees the red-hair girl motioning her forward, but her words make no sense. Tree cover would probably be smart, though. That... bird thing is HUGE. The trees will block its view of them. "Hey," she says, "We need to get a bang-club." She tries to gesture it. She thinks the other girl understands, but it's hard to tell. She's clearly a foreigner. Lurk quickly outruns her, darting and dodging through thick jungle brush. Something about the air here doesn't feel right. She feels a bit dizzy. Lurk never feels dizzy. Then, she comes upon it, in a small clearing away from most of the others: A big... square thing. She creeps up to its edge, cautious every step, and peers over. Inside is...

A fierce rustle in the bushes causes her to drop into a shoulder roll. She comes up, alert, but it's wasted energy. One of those great big ape-men comes running out of the brush, in a complete panic. "Quiet!" Lurk hisses, glancing, paranoid at the sky. She places her finger to her lips, hoping he'll understand. The red-hair girl is a little bit behind him. She glances his way, looks at Lurk, and rolls her eyes. She mutters something in a language that Lurk does not understand, but she can guess at the meaning. She smirks knowingly as her new friend tiptoes up. She points to the big square and makes a questioning face. The two women both look inside and gasp. This is clearly the motherlode. They find:

1) Roughly twenty swords of various types: flamberts, cutlasses, katanas, rapiers, a kilij, a claymore, and a zweihander
2) About a dozen pistols, mainly Glocks and S&W, but one Desert Eagle
3) A half-dozen or so hunting rifles of varying, but generally large calibre
4) Four submachine guns: three AK-47s and an M16
5) Two BAR M1918 light machine guns
6) One M240 medium machine gun
7) One GShG-7.62 heavy rotary machine gun
8) One FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile launcher (with three replacement rockets)
9) Lots of grenades
10) A handful of shaped charges
11) Various hatches, pocketknives, compasses, flasks, and a half-dozen raincoats
12) Loads of flashlights and a few firestarting kits, flare guns, and lanterns
13) Shoes
14) A set of four walkie-talkies and a polaroid camera
15) Dozens of cans of SPAM, a pack of marshmallows, and a still-warm extra-large Papa John's pepperoni pizza
16) A 24 pack of beer, a 12 pack of lemon-lime gatorade, and a large bottle of Aviation American Gin
17) A teddy bear
18) A book titled "A Caveman's Guide to Fauna of the Late Cretaceous Period". It uses mostly pictures to communicate information
19) Two pop-up tents rated for six people each
20) A full set of pencil crayons and a pack of sticky notes

Grug intrigued by wood shell. It like bones but made of wood. Or like basket. Grug poke with long stick. It make hollow sound. Would make good drum, but also good shelter. Not tall enough to sit down except for small people, but can put on stilts. But Grug have bad thought. Wood shell much too big to carry as basket even for strong man. But if there small people, maybe there also big people? Grug consider basket. Very, very big people. As big as tall trees. Or maybe made for mammoth to carry.

That maybe problem. Grug need better weapon than funny club. Grug look at wide stick. It heavy, stout. Thin end is not as thin as funny club, feels better in hand. Wide end good for bashing. Here is proper club, Grug think. Very smooth too. But too long, awkward in one hand. Maybe better if break in half, or would be good spear.

Grug roll basket over. It heavy. Grug regret skipping leg day. But Grug strong. There is rope inside basket. There also two stone rings on sides. Ahh. Handles? Rope look strong enough for giant to carry basket with. But rings too thin. Grug whack with club. But ring not break. Maybe bend a little, but not splinter. Like green wood, but... stone? Same stone as funny club. Grug have idea. Hit blowpipe end on shell. Not hard, but enough to break stone easy. Funny club not break.

Grug put all clubs in basket. He look at skinny man. Grug point at basket, then at forest. Then he grab rope. Two strong men maybe carry basket, but stranger is thin. Eat too much berry, not enough meat. Have to drag instead. "Grug pull. You push," Grug say.
