Rolling Rankings Discussion Thread

Chuffed.

So, looking ahead, here are my predictions:

1) The top spot is a two team race between Alex and Gabe, so suddenly that Armageddon! final really matters.

2) Dylan, Alex V, and Brad are all in contention for the third spot. Brad managed to stay close enough by the end of the regular season that he's still within striking distance and could very well regain his career-high rank.

3) Josh is sitting at a career high #6, but I don't see him breaking the top five. The teams above him have more bots in, better matchups, and/or too big of a lead.

4) Nick is eventually going to drop all of the way to #10, but not any further. If Alex is doing his whole rankings = seeding groups, it's going to suck for the people who have to face him in CBC2.

5) I'm on cloud nine about keeping my ppl2pass streak alive for another week. With some luck and good matchups, I think I could get as high as #6 by the end of the tournament, but that's very far from a sure thing.

6) HDiT has had some pretty rough playoff matches, and that'll continue next week. He'll pass Nick for now, but there's the possibility that Drew and I will eventually pass him.

7) Drew might rise only one rank before the end of the tournament. There's the possibility that he could rise none or possibly two. However, he doesn't have to worry about falling at all. There's over 600 points between him and Zach.

8) The good times are over for Zach. He's feasted on all of the inactive teams and is knocking on the door of the top ten again, but it's a BIG step up, and one he won't have a real shot at until CBC2.

9) Kody entering Hobbyweight in CBC2 may not seem like a big deal numberswise, but it heralds the beginning of the return of ARC's most decorated team and should help him tread water a bit and avoid falling too far.

10) Danielle and TBR Alex have both been solid, upper middle-of-the-table competitors for a while, but they bother suffered a really rough ROBOTS. They'll probably move up a bit come CBC2.

11) Pat and Riley both gained a reputation as perennial losers, but some solid recent results and more refined designs from both have seen them begin to shed this tag. CBC2 will see if they can make the leap to actual contention.

12) Playzooki, Bastien, and Brian are all going to have a lot of ground to make up in CBC2 due to their extreme inactivity.

13) With more experience under their belts, Jack and Eddie will be entering CBC2 looking to contend. At least the former managed to make the playoffs in ROBOTS.

14) With lots of dead-ish teams near the bottom of the rankings, Jamie and some of the newer teams will have plenty of room to move up during the first few weeks of the next major.

Rolling Rankings Discussion Thread

Just for fun (and also to have the math done beforehand, I decided to work out what the rankings would look like if the points decay six months post-CBC were to set in today instead of on the 15th, when finals results from ROBOTS and New Blood should be in to mess everything up. Ranks with exclamation points beside them indicate the number of bots that a team has that will be fighting for championships this week.

<big>Favourites</big>

These teams are consistent top performers on ARC, all of them fielding strong, well-statted designs almost always coupled with quality RPS. Virtually all possess a championship pedigree and are threats to win a title in every event that they enter. In majors, it's more of a surprise if they don't title or at least make a final.

Angry Goat Robotics: Gabe has mastered the art of the clamp, there's no doubt about it. His assiduous attention to detail has also proven to be the bane of many an opponent with a feature even slightly less than optimized.
Chaotic Robotics: Brad is known for making the insane somehow plausible with many of his designs. His outside-of-the-box solutions to problems often give his opponents fits, as do his quality RPs.
Ice Cubed Robotics: Master of the art of the wedge, Alex V is particularly infamous for his incredibly thorough RPs and aggressively wedgey machines, though that's not to say that he doesn't have other things in his repertoire.
Tartarus Robotics Group: More than anyone else on ARC, Laz represents aggression: pure and undiluted. His designs are almost exclusively fast and armed with excellent wedges. His RPs hit you like a boot to the face.
Team Blood Gulch: After a recent dip that saw him struggle mightily for the better part of a year, Josh has started to round back into form. Though he has a tendency to overuse designs, there's a reason for it: all of them are good and have won multiple championships.
Team Covenant: Here's how it works: Kody enters robots that may seem outlandish but actually have had quite a bit of thought put into them. Nobody knows how to handle them. He then turns out quality RPs and walks away with at least one title following every event.
Team Ignition: More than any of the other top tier teams, Dylan's ambivalence towards RPing stands out as a weakness amid well-designed machines, considerable tactical acumen, and a generally excellent understanding of the stat system.
Team Instant Regret: HDiT's obvious engineering background allows him to mechanically justify designs that would otherwise produce skepticism, and all of them demonstrate an attention to detail that is all-but unparalleled in ARC.
Team Mongoose: At some point, Nick made the jump from being the Wendy's to Josh and Kody's Burger King and McDonald's to being the man to beat. His designs are invariably strong, optimized, and play the metagame perfectly, and he just doesn't make mistakes in his RPs.
The Monsterworks: At times, it seems as if Alex M came to ARC specifically for the purpose of blowing it up. His designs push and prod at rules and others' patience. They seek solutions for problems that most don't even think of, and in doing so, they win. A lot.

<big>Contenders</big>

Experienced or relatively new, these are all quality outfits that will make the playoffs with most (or sometimes all) of their entries. Some of them are title-winning teams. Though they are less likely to outright dominate than the teams immediately above, they all have the potential to reach that level and occasionally do. Expect to see them deep in tournaments and sometimes featuring in title matches.

ACCount: Not much is known about ACCount, since he seems to prefer the shallow waters of reddit to the deep end that is ARC, but he can be counted on like clockwork to create designs that are extreme in some way, and when they work, are extremely good.
Alpha Robotics: Drew has come a long way from being an also-ran, and he's knocking on the door of top tier status. While his RPs can focus a bit too much on a particular aspect of a fight and his designs of late have skewed particularly 'safe', the formula has worked for him more often than not.
Killjoy Syndicate: One gets the sense that Jules just may be the craziest person on ARC, which is really saying something. She doesn't pop up often, but when she does, something absolutely bonkers, and that works, no less, is inevitably in order, and it will make the playoffs one way or another.
Oryx Robotics Group: Brian makes good robots. Period. He could easily jump to the next level and should probably be there. The only things holding him back are often perfunctory RPs and a lack of attention to the metagame.
Team 57: <del>Zach</del> Hii has been on the cusp of title contention for a while now, with a lack of attention to detail and minor flaws keeping him there. He seems to be ironing those out as of late, and with his favourite designs, hammers and vertical spinners, being strong in the current metagame, a title can't be long in coming.
Team Playzooki: Let's get this out of the way: playzooki's here to troll. That said, what he trolls with is aggressive and wedgey and tough, and those are all positive adjectives in ARC, so he keeps winning when he can be assed to.
Team TBR: ARC's third Alex has always struggled with a lack of consistency. His often-audaciously statted bots tend to be spectacular successes or abysmal failures, and his RPs, while rarely terrible, lack the understanding of design features and contingency plans that the top teams' strategies feature.
Team Yellow Alert: Nick S is one of the true veterans of ARC. While his team is top flight in almost all respects, his love of unconventional stat spreads has often proven more of a minus than a plus and he hasn't managed to consistently win titles of late despite his obvious talent.

<big>The Field</big>

Teams at this level are generally not considered part of the title picture. Whether it's due to substandard strategies, a tendency to forfeit, a lack of attention to detail, or designs that favour form over function, they just haven't been able to break through tot he next level. While none of these outfits have managed to bag a title, they do often make the playoffs with at least one entry, and it's a bit surprising if they get shut out altogether. Most are missing one critical piece of the puzzle, and addressing that issue would see them rise to the status of contenders.

Aquatic Robotics: Jack's learning curve on ARC seems to be reaching its conclusion, and his newest designs demonstrate a maturity in terms of their originality, optimization, and features that was previously lacking. Look for him to contend come CBC2.
Mr. AS: ARC's equivalent of that rare second evolution shiny that pops up once in a blue moon, when AS comes around, his machines are usually solid and fairly original. What he could do if he were more active is a matter of conjecture at this point.
North-West Sheds: Once the butt of jokes, North-West Sheds has recently morphed into a respectable outfit, courtesy of Riley's growing understanding of how design features play into stats and his willingness to take chances. Look for this team to start getting better, fast.
Team Fox: Ethan's aggressively designed and statted robots should be doing better, and they would, if he bothered to RP consistently. They demonstrate a fundamental understanding that many of the other newer teams lack.
Team Obscure: Bastien's biggest enemy has always been - and remains - himself. Whether he decides to go for something original or derivative (often seemingly at the flip of a coin), it inevitably falls just short of contention due to an oversight in stats, design, or strategy, and often sends its builder into a tailspin. A more levelheaded approach could see this team succeed bigtime.
Team Stealth: Danielle definitely has the potential to contend, and certainly has before, but her more original designs tend to ignore which features work well in the metagame, and she often falls back on loaner bots that are loanerbots for a reason.
Team Toxic: Adam may be retired, or he may not. He's never really been a top contender, and his renders often leave somethign to be desired, but he has enough experience that his robots rarely suffer from any truly crippling flaws and he can usually be counted on to squeak a couple into the playoffs.

<big>Longshots</big>

Perhaps they're new and inexperienced. Perhaps they forfeit every fight after the first couple of weeks in a tournament. Maybe they just haven't gotten the hang of roleplaying or have a pronounced tendency to design for looks instead of performance. They may struggle to understand what works in ARC's stat system or what makes a robot effective. Whatever the reason, these are teams that generally find themselves on the outside looking in, come playoff time. Can they take the next step? That remains to be seen.

Arsonists Inc.: It remains to be seen just how well this new team will do once it has gained more experience, but if its early designs are any indication, it's already pretty far along the learning curve and won't remain in the basement for long.
Demon Industries: One of the recent migrants from the GTM forums, Demons Industries is a bit of an unknown quantity at this point. Becoming familiar with CAD software would certainly be a boon to its chances going forward.
Neon Calypso: See above. I could just copy and paste it, but there'd be no point.
Team Cardboard Pony: Pat has slowly but surely climbed the rankings by virtue of sheer consistency. He doesn't win much, but he wins just enough to snag the occasional playoff spot and to at least put some points away in each tournament that he enters. With audacious stats and improved RPs, his next steps will be an improved attention to detail and the use of CAD software for his designs.
Team Crustacean: Steve was here to troll, and troll aggressively he did. At least his designs were fun, and sometimes they even worked quite spectacularly. Will we see him again on here? Only time will tell.
Team Edgy Robotics: Jamie's hesitancy with CAD software has hurt the ability of his designs to include many ARC-standard features, and while his RPs have improved, they're still not quite top flight. Still, the signs are good at this point. Look for him to keep improving and moving up in the future.
Team Foxtrot Uniform: Sylandro is a rendering god. He is easily one of the three best artists on TinkerCAD. That said, his understanding of the stat system is questionable at best, and many of his machines eschew design features that are considered ARC-standard.
Team Pesky Robotechnics: Pesky is an enigma. He shows up at tournaments once in a while with a team that is made up of half extremely strong and half hopeless machines, scores a bunch of upsets, and then promptly disappears, forfeiting the remainder of his matches.
