The Arenas of the Cherry Bomb Classic

Post by The Monsterworks » Fri Aug 04, 2017 1:46 pm

A Carnival of Chaos

One of the main things that set the Cherry Bomb Classic apart from other tournaments last year (aside from its large draw, house robots, and use of non-traditional weight classes), was its array of unusual arenas. However, given the enormous size gap between our largest weight class (340 lb. superheavyweights) and our smallest (12 lb. hobbyweights), as well as the continuing tradition of the CBC rumbles, we've decided to construct three different classes of arena for this iteration of the tournament. First are the M-Class arenas (M is for mini. Yes, I am creative), intended for hobbyweights, featherweights, and lightweights. There are nine of them in total: one for each of the six weeks of qualifying, and a further three for the playoffs. Larger than M-Class are S-Class arenas (S is for standard. I feel like I'm teaching the alphabet here), designed with machines ranging from middleweight through to superheavyweight in mind. Again, there are nine, with the same division between regular season and playoff arenas. Last but certainly not least are the R-Class arenas (the 'R' oh-so-creatively stands for 'Rumble'), which have been created specifically for the purpose of hosting rumbles and possible Gigaweight events in the future.

Every day until the the start of the tournament, or when I can be assed, arena layouts and descriptions, along with some pictures providing a rough idea of their themes will be posted in this thread. Feel free to discuss their features, potential issues, and potential strategies over in the Discussion Thread.

Below, I will also be keeping track of the house robots assigned to each arena by including them in that arena's post. Please ante them first in the discussion thread and then in your signup post once they're accepted. We're going to need a lot of them, so don't be shy, and feel free to offer whatever you have that you feel could fit the bill or perhaps even to render custom house robots should you feel so inclined.

The Arenas of the Cherry Bomb Classic

Hall of Ice and Wind

Image

Located in the frigid tundra of Yakutsk, Russia, this foreboding arena will bear the unique honour of being the very first that competitors will fight in this year. Prepare for a... chilly reception.

Image

Don't worry. It's not all made of ice. that's not to say that you won't have to wear your jacket in there. Also, make sure your batteries are well-charged. In such a frigid place, they'll last only as long as they need to and no more. Making the environment even more hostile will be the Howling Winds, a quartet of enormous vertical spinning discs that make up for their lack of velocity through sheer bite.

Image

Dispelling any fleeting notions of admiring the stark beauty of this place will be our two house robots, Cold Streak and Cold Steel. Unless you try to camp in front of their patrol zones, they'll play nice for the first two and a half minutes, toning their strikes down so as not to do more than cosmetic damage. For the final thirty seconds, however, all bets are off. Are you brave (or foolhardy) enough to challenge them?

The ice-wired, cold blooded killer from CBC1 returns for another season!

6WD, armed with a pair of horizontal clamping jaws on the front, a rear hinged snow plow scoop in the back, and of course, the deadly overhead vertical spinning bar.

Only the bar's teeth are exposed to protect a majority of the weapon held inside the dome, and the motors that run it are also housed inside the dome itself. Said dome that holds the weapon, also uses a multi jointed arm. You know Mark Setrakian's Snake, right? The arm basically works like that via hydraulics, in order to position the blade with an large range of motion. Yep. It's basically half-snake. The dome and arm are connected with a U-shaped support on top to make room for the weapon teeth, and bring down the weapon to bear. Can self right with the arm.

Also, the clamp can open up farther than shown in the picture :v:

Speed: 5
Traction: 5
Weapon: 20 (3 clamp, 3 hydraulic arm, 14 spinning bar)
Armor: 7 (+6 house bot bonus = 13 armor)

The Arenas of the Cherry Bomb Classic

Akhenaton's Curse

Image

Located in the shifting sands somewhere southeast of Aswan, Egypt, the long lost final resting place of an Egyptian Pharaoh will play host to the second round of hobbyweight, featherweight, and lightweight matches. Ignore the curse at your own peril.

Image

Don't worry. While the arena's triangular, the room it's in isn't. Radio signals will work. However, there wasn't much that we could to about some of the booby traps, I'm afraid. Beware the Pharaoh's fist, a great stone maul that pops out from what would seem to be a perfectly innocent sarcophagus mounted on the south wall. The poisoned spears that like to pop out from the walls are also best avoided, though last we checked, the poison wasn't very effective on robots, and once they'd popped out, they tended to stay that way. The <del>two meter deep</del> bottomless pit at the tip of the pyramid is also one to look out for. The wall that seals it off tends to crumble at the slightest impact.

Image

Dispelling any fleeing notions you may have of adventure and discovery will be our house robot: The Boulder, a giant spherical ball straight out of an Indiana Jones movie. Basically a scarier version of Psychosprout, it might not have any weapons, but man that thing is fast, and it'll flatten you when it hits. For the first part of the fight, it won't travel at quite full speed, smacking into you for only some moderate denting, but for the final thirty seconds, it's definitely best avoided.

Located deep in the Swiss Alps, this steampunk paradise has been lovingly handcrafted over the span of centuries. Now it will play host to the third round of hobbyweight, featherweight, and lightweight matches. The gears are turning, and once they start moving, you may stop.

Trampling all over your sense of wonder as you marvel at this mechanical miracle is our house robot, Brimstone, which will play nice for most of the fight, putting around the arena belching diesel smoke while doing little more than superficial damage and a bit of toasting to your armour. During the last thirty seconds, however, this steampunk nightmare will show its true colours, and you'd best watch out.

In the countryside of France, just outside of Caen, is an old cathedral that has been abandoned for decades and is slowly losing its battle against the elements. With the deep pockets of our sponsor, The Batterwitch Betty Crocker, we were able to stablize its crumbling structure and install a state of the art arena where the fourth round of our hobbyweight, featherweight, and lightweight matches will take place. Perhaps one should tread lightly where only angels dare.

Image

Welcome to hell in a place that once saw to the business of heaven. Within the dark and dank (not that kind of dank, Kody) confines of this decrepit cathedral lurk horrors. The pillars are adorned with seven-hundred year old Gargoyles, but two of them have been carefully brought to life (by which I mean replaced with robotics). Waiting to grasp unsuspecting robots in their claws, they will lift you high above the arena floor and the release you to fall to your death. Equally as dangerous is the Pipe Organ. Robots positioned underneath it will find themselves assaulted with a massive pneumatic spike that shoots down through the balcony floor above as the great, rusting monster begins playing an agonizingly out of tune version of Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. If this doesn't put the fear of God in you, I don't know what will.

Image

Attacking with the force and fury of St. Michael the Archangel himself are our pair of house robots, which have yet to be revealed. Perhaps our God fearing competitors might know something about them?

The Arenas of the Cherry Bomb Classic

Double Bogey

Image

In the idyllic countryside of Lincolnshire, England lies this absolute gem of a golf course. It may not always be the quietest place to play a few rounds with your business contacts, but we guarantee that you'll be in for a real challenge. Hole four, in particular, is a tough one. Almost everyone bogeys, and a lot of them double bogey. We've even seen more than a few snowmen on here, but ducks are more common, They nest by the pond, and boy do they get ornery sometimes! Welcome to Double Bogey, where the fifth and penultimate round of our hobbyweight, featherweight, and lightweight regular season matches will take place. Try to stay out of the rough, alright?

Image

Don't like golf? Well, just maybe this golf course doesn't like you! With a flat, even green made of carpet (hinged wedges and bristlebots beware), and the edges, where our house robot patrols being particularly deep carpet, this is a particularly punishing arena. In the northeast and southwest corners are a pair of sand traps that will deny your robot traction if you're unfortunate to be pushed into them. If you thought that you might be safe in the other two, then think again! The FORES! are a pair of reverse swinging hammers (Yep, they swing upwards) shaped just like golf clubs. Trust me: you don't want to get hit by them. Topping it all off is the Hole-in-One, a pit with a six inch lip. At the start of the match, the Golfball will be ejected from the hole and act as an additional annoyance for combatants. If you hated golf before this arena, it's not going to change your mind.

Image

Rootin-tootin' mad about the disturbance of its wetland habitat by men in topless hats, white pants, and pink polo shirts is our house robot, Miffed Mallard! This ornery avian is completely out of control and best avoided at all costs. It prefers to lurk in the rough on either side of the green, so beware whenever it suddenly decides to cross halfway through the match.

Miffed Mallard

Speed: 13
Traction: 4
Torque: 11
Armor: 7 (+6 house robot bonus)

This duck is pissed off. Is he mad about losing his home to deforestation? Maybe the lemonade stand still doesn't have grapes? Did he stub his toe? The real question is: are you in front of him?

So yeah, this guy has a clamp and a flamethrower. The flamethrower shoots out of the gaps in the top jaw. He's a silly housebot meant to wildly flail about his patrol zone and smash into everything. I think he's going in the golf-themed arena we've been talking about on Discord. 4WD btw because somebody is going to ask.

In a small city just outside of Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, lies a field of long yellow grass, grey skies, and a decaying monument to Victorian Era medical practice: The Asylum. Leased and repurposed for the Cherry Bomb Classic, this arena will play host to the final week of qualification matches in the hobbyweight, featherweight, and lightweight divisions.

Just like they were for unfortunate human inmates a century ago, these walls may be the last thing that your robot ever sees. The bulk of The Asylum is its large central chamber, with two successively smaller chambers on either side, all of which are favoured haunts of our diabolical house robots. Helping to hold uncooperative patients in place are the strait jackets, which are powerful clamps that lock for ten seconds over a robot that is pushed into their triggers. Always ready to operate are our pair of bonesaws: high kinetic energy horizontal sawblades that emerge from the corners of the main chamber.

The Spanish Empire left behind a pretty brutal legacy of exploitation, genocide, slavery, and repression, of that there is little doubt. However, fortunately for many of its former colonies, it also left behind some pretty damned cool architecture (because that, you know, totally makes up for the other things). One of these places is the old Palace of Justice in Havana Cuba. This baroque masterpiece, recently refurbished, has had a diamond-shaped arena temporarily installed in its atrium and will play host to our hobbyweight, featherweight, and lightweight eliminator matches.

The Bahamas may be a popular destination for tourism and offshore banking these days, but there was a time when no sane tourist or banker would dare set foot upon those pristine sandy shores. Instead, these idyllic islands were populated by pirates. Our quarterfinal arena, Broadsides, celebrates those times by subjecting hobbyweight, featherweight, and lightweight competitors to a multilevel nightmare of an arena chock full of hazards and reveling in a ship-to-ship combat aesthetic.

Image

Broadsides is not for the faint of heart (or battery), as opponents will start directly across from each other across a gap in the arena floor and shaped like the prow of those men-of-war of yore. Preventing reluctant landlubbers from camping out in their starting squares are St. Elmo

Equilibrium

China is the world's emerging superpower. There's no doubt about that. It's a common narrative, and one embraced by the Chinese authorities wholeheartedly. However, this rise to hegemony is a perilous one, fraught with pitfalls and dangers both foreseen and unforeseen. One could say that the path to power is dependent on a careful balancing act. It's only appropriate, then, as a political commentary, that this arena be set in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai, with its burgeoning cyberpunk skyline and swelling population of some thirty million souls. Perched atop a massive skyscraper nearly a thousand feet above the streets below in a show of grandeur and engineering prowess, is Equilibrium, where our middleweight, heavyweight, and superheavyweight robots will kick off the tournament. Yet, a political commentary is not what the authorities were looking for in this arena, so the theme has been altered. It's hard to keep everything running smoothly when your system has a errors in. When nothing is balanced. When everything is a glitch.

Image

A long, narrow arena, Equilibrium's primary feature is the fact that it's effectively a giant tilting room, with the speed of that tilt mitigated somewhat by hydraulic dampeners on either side and limited to ten degrees in either direction. AT any point, the arena can be reset to and locked in its neutral starting position for thirty seconds by pressing any of the four stability triggers. Stopping your attempts to box rush stone cold is the Great Wall, a foot-tall barrier that runs across the center of the arena and starts the match raised. Any damaging blows or flips dealt will cause it to lower for twenty seconds. Beyond that, there are four pairs of killsaws at the far eastern and western ends of the arena, and of course, our pair of house robots, which patrol in opposite directions at the same speed, only deviating from their course if attacked or if a competitor passes within a foot of them.

Image

The Chinese basically didn't want to be derivative, so they got someone else to build their house robots for them and then claimed that these were obviously made by China's best and brightest engineers. Take a look at these two fine specimens of house robots!

Guarding the northern patrol zone is the appropriately-named...

The Arenas of the Cherry Bomb Classic

Yes, this arena is really located on the helipad of the ultra-swanky Burj Al Arab - the same helipad that's been used for famous stunts such as playing an entire tennis match, doing doughnuts in an F1 car, and hitting golf balls into the Gulf of Aden. The setup from last year makes its return virtually unchanged, temporarily converting the famed helipad into a robotic combat arena that will play host to the second round of our middleweight, heavyweight, and superheavyweight fights.

As you can see, the center of the arena is taken up by the IED (Immediate Ejection Device) - an extremely powerful pneumatic floor piston (11 flipping power) capable of launching bots that park on top of it for more than two seconds over six feet in the air, though it's a bit more merciful, launching with only six power if the house robots decide to place any newfound playthings there. It's ringed by the concentric circles of our two house robots' patrol zones. Other than these rather basic hazards, Vertigo would seem to be a far more forgiving place to do battle than something like The Woodshed or Gothiq. That's partially true. However, it has a nasty surprise in store for combatants. After two minutes of fighting, the four foot high arena side walls fall away, in a manner reminiscent of the old Robotica arena. The final minute is essentially a sumo battle to the death, with the loser falling into the safety netting that rings the outside of the helipad. To prevent simple ramming attacks from resulting in OOTAs, the mini-IEDs are small arena pistons (spaced two feet apart) that have sensors and pop up in advance of robots barreling over the sides, stopping them from doing so. In short, it requires an actual flip - though not a particularly powerful one - to do the business.

And as for the housebots, well, they're both graduates of the Sir Killalot school of house roboteering, courtesy of Alex Valentine. They'll play nice for the first two and a half minutes, before using the full power of their weapons for the final thirty seconds of matches. Take a look at these two and be afraid. Be very afraid.

Patrolling the outer patrol zone is:
