VENGEANCE

Vengeance manipulates the machinery a bit and after a while feels fairly confident he can achieve the overcharge effect. He finds two posibilities within this - either he could set it up to trigger either automatically when Sikander intends to boost himself, or at Vengeance's own manual triggering.

"Hmmmm…

Let's go with manual. It would be nice to see the look on that smug git's face when his own ingenious contraption collapses into farts right in front of me.

Come on, friends! Time's a-wasting and I'm getting cabin fever in this bowls basement! Where do we go now?"

VENGEANCE

As Vengeance fixes the machine to be triggered at will, Vengeance considers his assets; an army of assorted amateur allies, as many of the Guild of Nefariousness as remain free and a secret attack in the form of overloading his own power to use against him. It would seem like it's probably time to formulate a plan of attack...

"You know, this sort of thing used to come so much quicker to me. I really must be getting old...

George, attend to the rabble upstairs and put those Level 1 loons on distraction duty. Tell them to seek out Sikander's new stronghold and to give the git as much grief as possible. I don't expect them to do anything effective, naturally, but it'll give Mother Brain a monster headache and maybe provide Gurdy a chance for escape, or at least a damn good laugh. More importantly, it'll keep them out of my hair for a while.

In the meantime, we need people who are both semi-competent and have actual knowledge of the peril at hand. Remember all those freaks and geeks we met back when we first got zapped here, George? I think it's time we renewed our acquaintance on slightly less...antagonistic terms. Slightly.

Come on, friends! Let's go save the world from total conquest - and then conquer it ourselves! To victory!"

BEAR IN MIND
Even as Bear in Mind hears the buzz of his communicator from amidst the crowd he is in, an altogether different sound of buzzing is overlayed, and even as he wonders what the bees want now, several armoured high tech assassins drop from the ceiling into the crowd with a thud. Coated in Bees, stinging them after crawling through the small gaps in their armour.

They seem rather dazed by the affair, but Bear in Mind notes a small data pad in one of their swolen hands that name him as an assassination target. Even as the would be murderers reach up for him, there is a slight click and a bolt is thrust directly in to the backs of their brains. Again.... no chance of snitches, but Bear in Mind feels pretty confident that this matches the MO of Sikander from what Tellu and Scarlett had described earlier.

The communicator message from Cyrus continues to ring....

VENGEANCE
The newly assembled would be Sikander fighters are directed off to besiege the Castle, and within a few minutes Vengeance can hear a series of Sky-ubers pulling up outside to transport many of them up towards their new target. Ahh the joys of mindless henchmen.

Meanwhile, Vengeance makes his own departure, following George in search of the others...

RICHFIELD, DURG, CYRUS, TELLU plus SASHA

While they do their shopping, a figure darkens the doorway, a familiar one that most haven't seen in a while, and Tellu most recently...

Suddenly in the background they hear the sound of various things clashing against an energy shield as in the distance some random mob of beings attack the castle, but far more preoccupyingly, Professor Vengeance walks through the door, George in tow...

VENGEANCE, RICHFIELD, DURG, CYRUS, TELLU plus SASHA

George puts on Vengeance's hologram display reccounting the events of his story so far since arriving, though filtered through his own narrative a bit - his depiction of himself, while not precisely good, has an innate nobility that is more important than that, while there is a little hype to it, it's seems mainly in the staging of scenes.

Mostly it ends up looking like a Shakespearean tale of how the grand aspirations of himself were betrayed by the Iago like figure of Sikander is his guise as Darksein. It goes so far as to imply that all the worst bits were Sikander's fault, and generally downplays them, but the overall narrative is compelling and essentially broadly truthful. The production values are pretty swell too.

Sorry for the delay everyone...

AND NOW, ON THE ODDESTSEY V

Vengeance certainly explains a plan, and to Durg it uses a lot of very smart sounding words which certainly sound like he has a plan. After a bit of intensive consideration, Durg is convinced and joins the side of Vengeance.

For the others though.... the pitch is not nearly so convincing – especially for Tellu and Scarlett who not long ago were banished to the space between dimensions for fairly arbitrary reasons. Vengeance, however, decides to take the assistance of the Space Ogre as a win and enough excuse to leave without having lost any face as a villain, departs, ready for the upcoming battle.

As he departs, the remaining the remaining Arbiters talk amongst themselves as they finally receive a message back from Bear in Mind....

* * *

Vengeance begins the task at hand by watching his amateur henchman swarm towards the castle – some are clearly incompetent, but there are a couple of potentially useful ones in there – a winged octopus wielding 8 flaming swords and a 60ft long hummingbird seem to be causing some surging from within the energy shield with their attacks, and energy surges from within to compensate, a deep echoing roar resounds forth from the castle, and suddenly the whole field collapses in a dramatic cascade of light. Gurdothraxxas has broken free....

Vengeance, Durg and associated cronies waste no time in heading for the main bulk of the castle and ploughing through the inner chambers and their defenses with ease. As they approach some of the inner layers, the sounds of Gurdothraxxas roaring in the depths resonate through the building, and minor quakes resound through it. Robots engage them, but Jackdaw and the others disengage from Durg and Vengeance enough to buy the pair to advance forward to face their target. The sound of battle rings behind them as they burst into the chamber of Sikander...

The Brain floats there, and there is a long moment where nothing happens... and then there is the sound of George messaging Vengeance to confirm that the teleport system has been bought under his own control. No more being teleported out into empty air this time.

Even as they take a single more step, the walls bristle with defensive mechanisms and an assortment of drones emerge from panels within the walls. There is a fraction of a second of pause, and then all hell breaks loose as Vengeance and Durg wade deep into combat with Sikander and his mechanised minions.

* * *

Elsewhere, a certain group of Arbiters arrives at the battle. Tellu, Scarlett, Richfield, Cyrus, the Being and Bear in Mind convene atop the floating Castle. They may have had no intention of teaming with Vengeance, but that doesn't mean that they had no intention of taking down Sikander. Most of the forces are below and what few drones remain atop are quickly dispatched.... they begin to make their way below...

VENGEANCE AND DURG

The room fills with hordes of robots of various forms – some are merely serving machines from earlier, some seem to be prototype bodies of Ziggy's Doomfauxalls, retrieved from the depths of the Castle and some neither Durg nor Vengeance have seen before. These last ones are undoubtedly designed directly for combat – thick armour plating and heavy weapons. They smash into the two arbiters like a wave of fury.

Durg is in his element; an endless legion to butcher and what few blows do land seem to merely bounce off his tough skin. The only thing they seem to have on him is sheer numbers, and even this only slows him down. Robots and skewered, smashed and torn a limb from limb as he wades through the horde.

Vengeance is not quite so suited to such a battle, and while he has partaken in more than a few melees in his time, it has never been his first choice. Too late for that now.... He dodges an incoming swordstrike from a Ninjandroid and blasts it backwards with a concussive shot from his cane before spinning round and shredding two further opponents with a rapid switch to propeller blades. A quick swoosh of his opera cape reveals flash of the living pattern which he had been storing on the lining and a few of the more primitive robots explode from trying to process it. Still not enough by half.

Durg has lost himself in battle – he fires off piercemaker towards the floating brain of Sikander and all the hordes of robots inbetween are reduced to a shower of shrapnel. But a foot away from the pulsing being the maelstrom of bolts are stopped by a field of energy that ripples blue in the impact. Sikander himself seems unphased. Durg doesn't take a moment before smashing towards one of the robot entrances and Vengeances sees a chance – a deft swing and one of the omega-lock buttons slams down on the door slamming it impregnably shut. Part of the tide of machines stemmed, Durg leaps over to the other side, chainblade revved and tears through yet more robots in a blinding fountain of sparks.

Seeing that this seems to hold them, Vengeance tries to offer enough cover for Durg to clear his way to the door – and even as he gets a chance, the second omega-lock button spins into place and the tide of robots is stemmed. Dozens still remain inside, and Vengeance dispatches several as Durg shreds through them, before turning to the brain which still sits there calmly.

For a mere moment only though as suddenly the entire room is filled with fire emanating from Sikander.

“That was surely an impressive display, I suspect that most would have been felled by such an assault. I am glad to see the data I had on the pair of you proved truthful. That was certainly impressive”

Vengeance reacted with lightning speed and flipped his propeller blade forward, projecting a wall of air to blow a deflect the incoming inferno in a narrow cone. He can feel the edges of his cape singing from the heat, and the amount of energy being produced here is staggering, even the super emerald within his cane is drawing more energy than it can produce to hold back this torrent. He can't see Durg.

“A new ability of my own. It seems the systems which allowed for new powers to be granted in this tournament gave me something of a boon... Had this happened before I would have nothing to strike at you with, but this pyrokinesis... has it's uses, if a bit crude”

It seems for a moment like the whole world is nothing but the psionic voice and the sound of roaring fires, the propeller blade is beginning to slow, just a fraction, the whirr is off just a tad... and then from deep within the fire he hears laughter. Deep resonant belly laughter, as if someone had told a crude joke. There is a slight pause in the psychic monologue as if even the all-calculating Sikander is unsure of what is going on.

“DURG THINK YOU FUNNY BRAIN! BRAIN THINK CAN STOP DURG WITH FIRE! BRAIN STOOPID! HAHAHA”

And Durg careens out of the fire looking somewhat different – gone is the green tone and Ogre form, this one glows red like cooling magma and has a decidedly demonic form. And not unnoticably, is now largely naked due to all his clothes being incinerated. But lunging forward the Demonic Ogre grasps the shield and squeezes. The energy barrier emits a high pitched shriek as is compressed by the titanic force of a satanically enhanced space ogre, and then it breaks with a shockwave that sends Durg flying against the wall and knocks Vengeance down.

“HOW?! This is not in any of my data?! How can you have done this?! My only recourse is to unleash my remaining powers”

Vengeance smiles for a second... his cane is depleted and will take a while to recharge, but he has this. The surge of energy begins to build within Sikander as he tries to summon the powers of the other arbiters... from a setup that Vengeance has already rewired a little. There is a psionic shriek as Sikander is incapacitated by the massive feedback loop Vengeance had engineered and the brain floats there stunned. Vengeance runs forward and draws his enammelled handgun – a weapon that has perfect accuracy within 3 meters, gets close enough and fires once, directly trying to hit as many critical parts as possible. The bullet streaks through and lodges into the wall on the other side.

The brain flops limply to the floor and suddenly flying through the air from where he'd been blasted, a decidedly nude space ogre stomps up and down on it until it is little more than a greasy paste in the carpet. Vengeance looks through the window to see Sikander's crystal shatter apart, and breathes heavily.

EVERYONE

Vengeance limps awkwardly back to the top of the castle. Time to prepare for whatever comes next and take stock of everything. With that crass cerebellum out the way, there was still room for him to pull a victory out of this, he begins to notice some of the other arbiters resting beside a pile of their own defeated robots. He chooses to ignore them while sauntering in such a manner as to not suggest the pain he is currently in. He'd sent Durg off with instructions to find SGR, so at least the Ogre wouldn't be here to make things worse.

But one of them was missing.... the Bear, the metamorph, the psionic, the dimetrodon and the young women were all there, but where was...? Shit......

It was nothing but a flash of green hair and the feeling of a vine grasped around his ankle. Then falling from the castle, down to the rapidly approaching city below. Falling with a depleted cane. The impact was the last thing Professor Vengeance felt just for a fraction of a second before everything was silent.

When his new cloned body climbed out of the green slime of the ghola-tank a few days later, George was awaiting him. He had his cane charged ready and a new suit. But the green haired witch would pay for this. That he was certain of, or his name wasn't Professor Reginald Vengeance.

EVERYONE ELSE

As the hovering stone belonging to Sikander crumbled, the two last combatants stood uneasily mere meters from each other. Bear in Mind the anthropomorphic personifcation of the concept of bears, shifting at this moment into a large ominous grizzly, and Sasha, the golden technological staff wielding woman. This contest was finally nearly over, but only one of them could survive it....

Not the death she wished upon Vengeance, but it works. Too bad she didn't smite Sikander herself. Such is life.

Tellu goes to the Eudial tree (with some trepidation obviously), puts her palm upon it, and tries to tap into the Old Magic like before, to see what opinions and information she can glean from Melded about Vengeance, as well as about both Sasha and Bear in Mind. To be so forthcoming with the remaining competitors she feels would be dangerous in this endgame stage.

She also once again promises to restore Eudial somehow, however long it takes.

Tellu tossing Vengeance off the tower to his not untimely doom was about as satisfying of a denouement to the whole business as could be expected. Noticing she was heading to the tree, and remembering what happened the last time he followed along. At the very least he might be able to pick up on what she might be planning on next.

TELLU AND BASICALLY EVERYONE WHO WASN'T JUST THROWN OFF THE ROOF

Tellu makes contact with the tree and reaches out with her magic, as the knowledge it provides flows through her. It is a little easier this time, and she is better able to discern what she is looking for...

She sees the corpse of Vengeance down below broken on the pavement. His equipment is missing though, presumably already looted by the time she is viewing this by some of the less savory of Melded's inhabitants.

When Tellu turns her attention to Sasha she finds a life lived enitrely within this city - albeit with some figure looming ominously over her life - her father perhaps? But though she can be standoffish and headstrong, there is a deep love and understanding for this place she was born in.

As she views Bear in Mind, she finds that it is made of old magic in itself, and barely visible through the magic of this place. Whats more though, she finds a being straining at the conceptual seems - it seems it has recently defied its own context and will likely continue to do so. Should Bear in Mind die, a new Bear in Mind will be formed, but equally, should Bear in Mind stray too far from the idea of Bears, what will become of it? Even the Old Magic doesn't truely seem to know for sure. Can a personification exist if it no longer represents what it is personifying.

As for Eudial, it seems that she is potentially approaching the time it is to emerge from the tree... but the castle is holding her in stasis until the tournament is over - it clearly deems a superpowered war to be a bad situation to be reborn... or perhaps it is holding her in reserve should the tournament go a dubious way? The old magic seems unsure.

Tellu backs away from the tree.

The time has come to decide...

...and the decision seems to come to her almost immediately.

NOT the bear.
