Top 5 Current and Past Artists

Post by Area51Escapee » Tue Oct 03, 2006 9:21 am

This should be an interesting topic for some people to do. Mostly because a lot of people tend to listen to mainly either older bands or current bands. However, what is your top 5 for each category? I'll start it off here...

Top 5 Current Bands

1. The Goo Goo Dolls

Their last CD wasn't that great mostly because they moved from alternative rock to soft love ballads but overall, they still remain my current favorite band because of some of their awesome albums like Dizzy Up The Girl, Gutterflower and A Boy Named Goo. In my opinion, the best in pop rock.

2. Breaking Benjamin

They are still going strong. Their newest CD, Phobia, wasn't as good as their previous one but they still have a lot left in them. They could really good for years to come.

3. Coldplay

Originally famous for great songs like "Clocks" and "The Scientist", Coldplay became famous. Now, they are just as strong putting out more good hits like "Speed of Sound" and "Talk". Coldplay is a soft rock band that focuses on simple yet good music.

4. Shinedown

Saw them live in concert in June. They have a lot of great songs such as "I Dare You" and "45". Their recent songs I like a lot and they are the best in hard rock nowadays.

5. Dragonforce

They've got a very unique sound that is reminiscant to that of video game themes. They lead singer has a very good, strong voice. The music sounds very good for metal, and metal usually sounds trashy in my opinion.

Other bands that almost made the list are Jet, The Killers, Linkin Park, Evanescence and Three Days Grace.

Top 5 Past Bands

1. Aerosmith

There are so many countless hits you can name from Aerosmith. They have done so many good stuff over the years. They have such timeless hits like "Walk This Way", "Dream On", "Sweet Emotion", "Amazing" and the list goes on. The best of classic rock.

2. Nirvana

This band had quite an impact for just a 7 year run. Some of their songs were mediocre, but much of their stuff was great. Nevermind is an album that launched their fame and made such a huge impact. Kurt inspired a generation with the music still remaining popular today. Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of the best songs ever.

3. Queen

Probably the band that the most memorable songs. Their unique style and operatic/rock themed style was perfect for a lot of the songs they made. Freddy Mercury was one of the best singers ever and the songs have become anthems.

4. The Beatles

Yeah, they are oldies, but they were the absolute best in their time period. Let's face it, they are even popular today for a reason. No band has put out so many hits and hits that still stand strong today. I don't listen to them all the time, but I still the upmost respect for them and definitely still listen to some of their stuff like songs from "Sgt Peppers" and "Magical Mystery Tour".

5. Metallica

There is a reason even the people who don't like metal like Metallica. They have great songs with good guitar leads, very well thoughout lyrics, a powerful lead singer and it is all accomplished without relying on screaming (which is what most metal bands do, which is why they suck.) Too bad Metallica hasn't been good in years.

Other bands that almost made the list are U2, CCR, The Replacements, Pink Floyd and Bruce Springsteen.

If you have limewire or something similar, look for their cover of "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Awesome. Also, if you're into Skynyrd, Deftones has a sweet metal remake of Simple Man as well.

Haha, i would actually put Three Days Grace near the bottom of the barrel that is current mainstream music. That song Home might have the worst lyrics to any song ever.

I can't stand Classic Rock for the most part, no I won't make a list, but Pink Floyd, The Who, and Queen are all unforgetable. At The Drive-In is probably my favorite band that I wish were back together. Oh well, There's still The Mars Volta, and The Fall of Troy takes over where they left off.

Current:

1. Nine Inch Nails - probably the most complex and diverse music created by essentially one man. He's been around for almost 18 years, and still puts out wonderful and unique stuff. Beauty in dissonance. It's anything from harsh vocals and heavy distortion set to a pounding beat, to a slow beautiful piano ballad. The emotion that is in this man's music is unrivaled by anyone and you can feel it when you listen to it. The Downward spiral is the most amazing musical experience I've ever had, especially in context with the story that the album tells. The listener goes through resentment, anger, romance, sorrow, and is left an absolute mess at the end. The only album that's ever made me cry, and for that, Trent Reznor and his magical fun box are number 1 current artists, and probably ever.

2.The Mars Volta - Amazingly complex and innovative rock music that combines the sound of old with the sound of new, to create completely mind-blowing music.

3. Gorillaz - You can't classify their music in any genre, it just is. It's hip hop, rock, techno, blues, gospel, and just an incredible audio experience.

4. Green Day - They really are the voice of this generation, where it's songs with actual meaning or just goofy songs about masturbation or yo-yos.

5. From First To Last - I'd say this is the band with the most potential. They started off like pretty generic, but slightly above average emo-style music. But on their last album, it was like a storm of maturity. They dropped the stupid gimmick look and created music that sounds unlike anything else. If they keep this up, and keep improving, they may be the great stand out band of the last 5 years.

Current:

1. U2.... How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb took a little time to grow on me, but I love several of the tracks on this one.... Love And Peace Or Else, Vertigo, One Step Closer... plus their B-Sides still worth listening to.

2. Weird Al Yankovic.... ok, he comes and goes like a Karma Chamelon, but he's got a new album out and after seeing the "Weasel Stomping Day" sketch on Robot Chicken, he's still awesome.

3. Jewel.... I love her voice. Her songwriting leaves a little to be desired, but I'm captivated by her voice.

4. They Might Be Giants... so awesome.

5. Outkast.... brilliant rappers. Clever when they need to be. And even when they want to be.

Old:

1. Four Seasons.... really too many groups in this list to mention, but Four Seasons have always been on top. Don't love all of their songs, but they are just so awesome.

2. Beatles.... They really are awesome. Even their solo efforts (yes, even Ringo's.)

3. Elvis Presley.... the man could sing, and he could turn even the stupidest songs into catchy listenable tunes. I even enjoy the man's '70s stuff.

4. Four Preps.... I love the vocal mastery of these guys. Even they parody/imitate other groups, they do it terrifically.

5. Creedence Clearwater Revival.... this band has such a pure, honest sound it reverberates in the well-water that flows through my blood. This band has the image I'd want my band to have: by day, they look like they work in the fields as barns baling hay and shoveling manure. But all they had to do was walk on stage, silently, pick up their guitars, and just let their axes do the talking.

So many more I wanted to list: Righteous Brothers, Drifters, Buddy Holly, Rolling Stones, Perry Como, Vogues, Beach Boys, etc. Just keeping it to five.

Whoa, Weird Al finally came out with a new album. I must buy it. Along with The Grudge. It looks like a trip to Best Buy is in order.

Anywho...

Current:

1. Big and Rich- I own both of their cd's and there isn't really a single song that disappoints. I can play either of these album's straight through and not skip a single song. I love the country/rock type of music.

2. Breaking Benjamin- I started listening to them because they were local. Then I realized how awesome they are. I know the new cd didn't far too well, but I still wouldn't mind having it.

3. 3 Doors Down- I absolutely love this band. I'm going to wear my Away From the Sun cd out soon enough.

4. Kenny Chesney- Yes, I have quite the vast musical interest...some hard rock/metal, modern rock, and country. His past few albums have been amazingly good, hardly any sings not worth listening to. He has a perfect voice for country.

5. Velvet Revolver- From what I've heard, not too many other people like them and they're broken up already, but I bought Contraband and there was only 1 or 2 songs that I didn't care for.

Past:

1. AC/DC- My favorite band of all time, obviously. When I was 7 my dad would put on some AC/DC on and my brother and I would jump up and down on the bed to it. From there I grew to like every aspect of AC/DC as they changed through the years.

2. Aerosmith- Another band I grew up listening to. Any of their stuff is good.

3. Metallica- Metallica is more of a current band for me because I didn't start to listen to them til a year ago. Lots of good songs and they make metal sound good. (Though I wouldn't call it metal anymore.)

4. Iron Maiden- Great older hard rock band.

5. Ozzy Osbourne- I started off liking his newer stuff (from Down to Earth), then I started actually listening to his old stuff. I guess it's kinda backwards because he's such a legend, but I started off liking his not-as-popular stuff.

Honorable mentions: Rammstein, Weird Al, Queen, Toby Keith, Nickelback, Garth Brooks, Def Leppard, The Beatles, The Monkees

Already have it. It's a really good song and they did a good job with the cover version. We also heard that one live...pretty awesome.

As far as Three Days Grace, Dylan, I think they have a lot of pretty good songs and a few really good ones (like Animal I Have Become). The song Home I like not because of the lyrics, but because of the music which is what songs should mostly be about. In fact, I only start paying attention to the lyrics only AFTER I like the song in most cases.

If they're broken up, then they aren't current, right?

Or did I miss the point?

And it's fine that you like 3DG, everyone has their own opinions. Animal I Have Become has a catchy bass line, but I just haven't been able to get into them based on their lyrics and their limited musical ability.

Admittedly, I've only seen Velvet Revolver once: during the Live 8 concerts. I heard them start before I saw the screen. At first I thought, "Oh, an 80s hair metal band performing? COOL!" Then I saw them on the stage and I thought, "Ah fuck, is there ANYTHING the British won't gay up?" Seriously, it was like the Pet Shop Boys made over Twisted Sister or something.

I don't any of them are british actually.

Isn't it Guns and Roses, just with the singer of Stone Temple Pilots aka skinniest man alive.

Pet Shop Boys are definitely British. Velvet Revolver, I'd bet money. Twisted Sister is American, yeah. But the point is Velvet Revolver is 80s hair metal gone gay. Really really REALLY gay.

Oh god Chris, thanks. I loved the song "I Dare You", so I downloaded "45" 2 days ago and I already listened to it 54 times! Now I'm friggen obsessed.

Yeah, Velver Revolver was just Gun N' Roses with the singer from STP.

whatever. It just seemed REALLY gay, the lead singer, topless wearing leather pants with suspenders.... I wish I could get that image out of my head.

Past Artists:

1. The Four Tops

Ahh, what a great group. They may not have had as many big hits as some of the other big Motown groups like the Temptations or Supremes and such, but they did have a good number of good ones.

2. The Eagles

A classic band, though I'm mostly a fan of their hits from '72 through about '79 more than anything else. Hotel California is not my favorite though, its good, but not the best.

3. Creedence Clearwater Revival

I guess I can't come up with something as flowery as Phil did, but nonetheless its a band I highly rate.

4. The Temptations

Hey, I love Motown, and the Temptations were one of the best groups in that catagory. I'm not crazy about some of there later stuff, but that aside, they could really churn out the hits.

5. The Drifters

Another great group who could really sing. "Under the Boardwalk" remains one of my favorite songs of all time.

Honorable Mentions: Elton John, The Spinners, Jay and the Americans, America, and Simon and Garfunkle.

I don't listen to mainstream music, so most of you will probably have never heard of the bands I listen to.

Current Bands/Artists:

Death Cab for Cutie - Indie Rock/Indie Pop: Lead singer Ben Gibbard is currently one of the best/most poetic song writters. Good lyrics combined with strong vocals and an addictive sound makes them the perfect indie band.

Matthew Good band - Indie Rock/Alternative Rock: Great and sometimes weird lyrics from a great vocalist (not surprisingly named Matthew Good) and melodic guitar makes this band oh so good.

The Format - Indie Rock/Indie Pop: This band has surprisingly good lyrics and a sound that allows you to easily flow between songs.

The Decemberists - Indie Rock: Mainly accoustic songs with a lead singer that captures your attention.

The New Pornographers - Indie Rock/Indie Pop: Although it is catagorized as Indie Rock, you'll find that hard to believe after listening to any of their songs. Probably the most unique band I have ever heard.

Past Bands/Artists:

AC/DC
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Beatles
Queen
The Rolling Stones
