group 1
NHS (Flipper Mode) vs Raccoon XL

The long and short of this one is that Raccoon wastes the first portion of the fight trying to flank NHS, but it doesn't have enough of a speed advantage to consistently pull that off, which is compounded by its mediocre control. When it manages to flank, it's able to wedge, high-centre and shove NHS around at will. However, it refuses to pit its opponent for reasons unknown. NHS inevitably bucks itself loose with the flipper. It succeeds in its own right at flanking Raccoon a couple of times, and one of these results in a spectacular flip that sees Raccoon sail end over end, crashing into the barrier and nearly out of the arena. NHS presses its advantage and manages to chuck Raccoon hard into the barrier again, but the angle's not right for an OOTA.

In any event, the Team Fox bot escapes, resets, and tries flanking some more. On one of these attempts, it oversteers and finds itself under NHS' wedge. It flips its opponent immediately, only for NHS to self right by doing a spectacular 540 somersault. Raccoon is under it again, however, and this time from the side. It tips NHS gently onto its side, but firing the flipper again allows it to flail back onto its wheels. It still eats a nasty slam into the barrier.

Now aware that it has the better wedge, since NHS' pointed wedge only rests on a single tiny part at the tip, Raccon becomes mroe aggressive, and the complexion of the match changes. NHS takes a trip to the spikes. It gets slammed into the wall again, and tipped multiples times. It always manages to self-right or free itself with the flipper, but by the conclusion of the match, it seems to be running low on CO2. For its part, Raccoon XL inexplicably fails to close out this match by pitting its opponent, so we're going to the judges.

Aggression: 3-2 Raccoon XL ||| Damage: 3-2 NHS ||| Control: 3-2 Raccoon XL

Raccoon XL wins 7/6

Yeager 1 vs thunderstryke (writer mole55)
And, in a shocking turn of events that nobody could've predicted, Peskius hasn't turned up.

His bot's still here though, so we've still got a fight! For science, we've gotten a local chimp to drive Yaeger. The reasoning behind this can best be described as "somethingsomething-neurobiology-somethingsomething-response to stimuli" Basically, the chimp has been trained to look at combat robots. It has then had a load of pain-causing implants attached to its nervous system, which activate whenever Yaeger takes damage. The theory is that the chimp will begin to associate the two, and learn to drive Yaeger away from Thunderstryke. In theory.

3...2...1...Activate!

And Thunderstryke is off, and going right after Yaeger. Meanwhile, the chimp is poking the controller, and generally figuring out that that causes Yaeger to move. He has no time however, as Thunderstryke delivers a crushing blow to the tracks of Yaeger! The track is visibly broken, and doesn't seem to be moving. Maybe that's because of the damage, or maybe that's because the chimp is... writhing around on the floor in pain. Ah. We seem to have overestimated the chimp's ability to keep going. No matter. We just call off the match.

Syl, we've stopped the match. STOP HITTING YAEGER! STOP! YES THE DRIVER'S TAPPED OUT, HE'S ON THE FLOOR!!
Animal cruelty must never hear of this...
Also, why do we keep inviting Peskius to these things...

Thunderstryke wins by KO at 0:13!

group 2
the animals vs feeling crabby (writer hellhound)

So, this is a pretty cagey fight. At the start, Ocean makes a beeline for the pit release, while Feeling Crabby floors it for a corner where it hopes to <del>crab</del> turtle for the entirety of the match. Both of them get what they want. Meanwhile, poor Island doesn't quite get to cut its opponent off from reach the corner. What follows is about ten seconds of futile attempts at flanking a bot firmly nestled in the corner. Before long, Ocean joins in on the <del>tedium</del> fun and we're treated tot he spectacle of two zippy clusters utterly failing to flank a giant, angry crab that regularly threatens them with dismemberment. That 'death hum' from its dual disc is really something.

After about one minute and an escalating chorus of boos from the audience, Feeling Crabby oversteers a bit and Island darts in. It manages to pry one of the crab's wheels off of the ground, but Jack quickly j-hooks into Island's side and...pretty much vapourizes a wheelguard. Island also gets flipped onto its back and seems to have a janky wheel. However, the j-hook leaves Feeling Crabby vulnerable to being wedged, and Ocean is under it before you can even say 'Tangaroa'. Due to the design of Ocean's prongs, Feeling Crabby struggles to gain purchase and get off, and it starts getting pushed towards the pit. Island comes in and tries to help, and the two parts of the cluster seem to be having an easier time of things.
Then the Crab escapes. One of its front prongs catches on the grate of the fire pit and that wrenches it free and causes it to pivot involuntarily. It goes right into Island, and now the little robot is right-side up again, wedgeless and struggling to drive in a straight line. Crabby tries to retreat back to its corner, but it gets wedged by Ocean again, which pushes it inexorably towards the pit. The Crab doesn't go down easily, however. It flails on that wedge, partially stuck and partially free. Island limps back, and the Crab can't resist trying to turn into it again and put it out of its misery. It's not enough though. Carefully, and ever so gently, Ocean shunts it to the edge of the pit, it teeters, and drops in.

The Animals win by KO (pit) at 1:39
That's one result from last week. Alex bugged me to get them in so that he could include New Blood Results in the rankings this week.

hellhound vs doorstop (writer attackfrog)
Doorstop and Hellhound face each other down as the announcer counts it down: "3... 2... 1... Activate&#33;" Doorstop immediately takes off, circling around to get at Hellhound's side. Hellhound stays in place a moment, watching to see what its opponent is doing, then turns and zips in directly at Doorstop. Doorstop tries to turn and face Hellhound but is just a little slow to react, and Hellhound's plow collides with the corner of Doorstop's wedge. Doorstop is spun around as Hellhound blows past it.
As Doorstop recovers and goes back on the chase, Hellhound decides to go for the pit release right away and slams its plow into it. This gives an opportunity for Doorstop, not far away now, to rush in and get underneath Hellhound from the rear. Hellhound sees this coming and tries to turn away but only partially succeeds as Doorstop gets under a wheel and flips Hellhound over sideways. Its wedge now inverted, Hellhound starts slowly rotating its lifter over the body of its robot and goes back on the offensive, attempting to flank Doorstop to push it around.
Doorstop sees its chance to wedge Hellhound again and does so, attempting to push Hellhound toward the wall but unable to do so with its low-torque drivetrain. Instead, Hellhound drives right over Doorstop, narrowly missing getting flipped again as it does so. Doorstop spins around to try again, but as it does so Hellhound decides to reverse into it and catches its side. Doorstop tries to spin away but ends up on a floor flipper, which triggers and sends it over onto its back.
By now Hellhound's lifter has finally come back down and is ready to wedge again. Doorstop quickly rights itself but is immediately set upon by Hellhound, which manages to get underneath its side this time, raising one of Doorstop's wheels off the ground. It tries to push Doorstop toward the pit, but Doorstop still has enough traction to move itself a bit, and so the two crash into the wall instead. Hellhound backs away to ram Doorstop again, giving its opponent enough time to turn to face it, but this time before they collide Hellhound lowers its wedge to scrape the floor and manages to get underneath Doorstop's wedge and push it up against the wall again.
And with that, the match is over&#33; Was it really three minutes? We'll have to look at the replay to be sure. Nevertheless, this one's going to the judges.

Aggression: 3-2 Doorstop
Damage: 3-2 Hellhound
Control: 3-2 Hellhound

It's a close call, but your winner is... Hellhound&#33;

thunderstyke vs nhs (writer attackfrog)

"3... 2... 1... Activate&#33;" N.H.S. slowly advances toward Thunderstryke, which is staying in place, waiting for its opponent to get in range of its devastating pickaxe. Suddenly Thunderstryke darts forward, closing the distance between them. N.H.S. quickly turns to dodge to the side, but Thunderstryke quickly fires its weapon, hitting N.H.S. on the side of its flipper and punching a hole clean through it.
N.H.S. is luckily still able to drive, and once the axe has retracted it zips off, trying to flank Thunderstryke. Thunderstryke was prepared for this, however, and circles around with it, lining up another shot with its pickaxe. Seeing its opponent's unexpected ability to keep up with its speed, N.H.S. decides to just go for it and goes right for Thunderstryke, hoping to get underneath it and push it around. But this is just the chance Thunderstryke was looking for, and the axe comes down again, this time hitting something important: after they separate, the right side of N.H.S.'s drive system seems to have stopped working.
With its opponent now a sitting duck, Thunderstrike goes to town with its "hammer of justice" until N.H.S. begins to resemble a wedge of swiss cheese.

Your winner, by K.O.: Thunderstryke&#33;

raccoon xl vs Yeager 1 (writer hellhound)

So yeah, Peskius is nowhere to be seen and his bot gets roflstomped in his abscence.

Raccoon XL wins by FF&#33;

group 2

doorstop vs the animals (writer attackfrog)

"3... 2... 1... Activate&#33;" Island zips off toward the pit release button, Doorstop zips off after Island, and Ocean zips off after Doorstop. This is going to be a fastpaced fight&#33; Island bonks into the button, but even before the pit begins to lower it's been wedged from behind by Doorstop, which gets underneath and flings Island sideways and back towards the center of the arena. Ocean, right behind Doorstop, now gets underneath it, lifting its wheels off the ground. Island has landed on its back, but it's hard to see a difference in its driving as it circles around to help its partner.
Before it gets there, Doorstop fires its flipper again and slides off Ocean enough for one of its wheels to touch the ground. It spins to the side just as Island zooms in, getting underneath it from the front and banging it into the pit release button. Ocean backs away a bit to get a better angle to push Doorstop around, but Doorstop's wheels somehow find purchase on Island's top side and it's able to drive off.
Both Animals drive after it in pursuit and a tense chase begins. Doorstop manages to get under Island again and flip it, but Island bounces off a wall and back onto its wheels. Ocean and Island repeatedly corner Doorstop and briefly pin it, but their focus on trying to angle it into the pit often lets it slip away. The match is drawing to a close and the audience is beginning to get bored when Ocean finally finds the angle it was looking for, gets under Doorstop from the side, and takes Doorstop with it into the pit.

Your winner, by T.K.O.: The Animals&#33;

feeling crabby vs hellhound (writer mole)

Here we have two of the best robots in the tournament. This should be fun...

And we're off&#33; And neither seem to be trying to hide as they both go straight for each other. They're about to hit, but Hellhound looks like it's going to turn slightly... And Hellhound is under&#33; Now, Hellhound is turning for the pit button, whilst under Feeling Crabby. Into the button they go, which launches Feeling Crabby off of Hellhound's wedge, This puts Feeling Crabby in a position where it has very easy access to the tyres of Hellhound, however Laz can also see that, and reverses a bit as the collision happens. Crabby gets a good hit on the side, leaving a huge rip in it and flipping Hellhound. However, it still runs, very different than if Crabby had hit the tyre. As Hellhound reverses out of the way, Crabby goes for the wall.

Hellhound flips it's lifter over, and goes for Crabby again. Hellhound goes over to the wall, and gets under Crabby again. This time, the pit is open, and Crabby gets pushed in quite soon.

Hellhound wins by KO in 1:11&#33;

Peskius seems to have replaced himself with a life-size cardboard cutout of a raccoon, to which he has taped the controller for his robot. Let's see how this works out for him.

"3... 2... 1... Activate&#33;" Yeager sits still in its starting spot as N.H.S. drives around to its side and cuts into its tracks with its saw. Once the track is completely sawed through, N.H.S. moves on to the other side and saws through that set of tracks as well. It proceeds to begin cutting random places on Yeager, trying to hit a vital spot. We'll never know if it does so, because the referees have finally stopped the match.

Your winner, by forfeit: N.H.S&#33;

thunderstyke vs raccon xl (writer mole)
Well, Thunderstryke hasn't turned up. Just isn't here. So we can't even bring out the chimp, although I doubt we could anyway, what with the fact it's now in therapy.

<big>Raccoon XL wins by FF&#33;</big>

group 2
hellhound vs the animals (writer attackfrog)

"3... 2... 1... Activate&#33;" Boy, are these robots fast. The Animals have immediately split up, and Hellhound chooses to go after Ocean, chasing it as it drives itself into the corner. Hellhound slams in behind it with a huge crash, and Ocean is scooped up onto its side. But Island is close behind now and slams into Hellhound from the side, getting underneath it and lifting that side off the ground as the force of the impact carries them both into the other side of the corner.

Ocean flops back down onto its wheels and zooms around to get back into the action as Hellhound reverses off of Island and then tries to wedge it. Island backs off and an extended chase sequence begins: Hellhoud chasing one of the Animals, wedging it against the wall, the other Animal wedging it, and it driving off and the whole series events starting over.

Eventually Mole realizes he's not able to pin Hellhound and decides to go for the pit release anyway. Now the chase becomes a lot more tense as each competitor tries to push the other into the pit. But all three are well driven robots with great drivetrains, and the drivers are able to avoid being pitted until the match ends. It goes to the judges.

Aggression: 3-2 Hellhound
Damage: 3-2 Hellhound
Control: 3-2 The Animals

Your winner, by judges' decision: Hellhound&#33;

feeling crabby vs doorstop (writer hellhound)

Well, contrary to Jamie's earnest plea, his wedge gets hurt quite a bit in this fight. The crab hides in its corner and Doorstop just can't flank it. While attempting to wedge, it loses out to Crabby's <del>prawns</del> prongs and isn't quite quick enough to back away while the crab darts forward a bit. Doorstop takes a couple of big hits and more or less backs off after that, with its wedge very badly warped. Not much of note happens after that and the crowd boos loudly by the conclusion of the match.

Aggression: 4-1 Doorstop
Damage: 5-0 Feeling Crabby
Control: 4-1 Feeling Crabby

Feeling Crabby wins a 10-5 decision

the final

The Animals vs Hellhound V ( writer monster)

So, I've been unilaterally appointed as writer of this match by Pat, despite not agreeing to it and voicing my protest, but this thing has to finish, and I guess my sense of duty is my weakness here, but don't expect a high-effort result.

The long and short of it is that Riley's pit release baiting strategy at the beginning backfires when Hellhound pushes that half of his cluster into the pit release. Moments later, the other Animal smashes into Hellhound. We have a bit of a pileup.

There's a lot of pushing and shoving, and general bricky goodness (by which I mean, the cure for insomnia). Hellhound gets smacked into an awful lot, but The Animals have no way of controlling it what with all of that ground clearance and its legendary drivetrain. For its part, Hellhound can't do much either. Every time it scores a nice slam, it can't finish by plowing that half of the cluster into the wall, as the other interrupts its maneuvers. In general, The Animals seem to have the slight upper hand.

The turning point comes when Hellhound decides to maneuver the fight towards the pit. Climbing the wedge of one half in reverse, it's able to wedge the other from behind as it comes in to help. Island takes the plunge, and Hellhound very nearly goes in with it, but is able to squirm away yet again. That thing is almost impossible to corral. What ensues is a largely even pushing match between two bricks, with Hellhound being wedged more often but less impactfully, and Ocean getting absoluely labeled into one of the walls and actually ending up in the pit about one second after the final buzzer sounds. This is a real close one. Let's see what the judges have to say.

Aggression: 9-6 The Animals
Damage: 9-6 Hellhound V
Strategy: 9-6 Hellhound V

Result: Your winner, and New Blood champion, is Tartarus Robotics Group's Hellhound V&#33; Congratulations to Laz and commiserations to Riley. Here's to the future and sterling careers for both of you on ARC.
