Whodunnit: The Detectives' Lounge

Post by Madman » Mon May 08, 2017 10:13 pm

The Detectives' Lounge

Welcome to the detectives' lounge. As you walk in, you are immediately assailed by a miasma of cigarette and cigar smoke. It's everywhere and there's no escaping it. However, soft but intense jazz music that sounds oddly familiar also wafts through the air and voices rise and fall above the ever-present hum of conversation. One fellow, with a stylish fedora pulled low over his brow, has brought his typewriter with him. He's seated at the end of one of the sofas, a half-empty (or half full?) glass of scotch on the end table beside him, hammering away at the keys. A handful of others stand around in conversational groups, holding similar glasses, cigarettes hanging limply from the corners of their mouths as they describe their latest cases. A lone woman in a red dress, with wavy black hair and a fur scarf, occupies a corner of the room, leafing through a notebook. A young guy with his sleeves rolled up and his hair slicked back has spread a series of notes, dossiers, and photos over one of the tables. As you walk in, he's puzzling over them and trying to draw links and lines of causation. Finally, an older fella in a trench coat is sitting alone by a window, gazing out of it with just the right mix of unruffled coolness and the lingering sense of unease that follows a detective everywhere. You place your slightly battered but still dignified leather briefcase on a table. Surely, with all of these top-notch sleuths in one place, you can crack the case. Maybe if you start sharing ideas instead of trying to go it solo - despite the considerable allure left by the mystery and romance of such an image - you'll be able to piece together just Whodunnit.

So, this is where you guys discuss the bracket, observations about who might be RPing for which robot, where you stand in terms of qualification, and your reasons for thinking what you think.

You'll also be able to receive confirmation or denial of two of your theories each week from the TO. Don't push it, though. Only a maximum of two suspects can be involved in any theory presented. The detective with the most correct theories by the end of the group stage will win the Detective's Briefcase unless someone has outright cracked the case, so be careful! You'll want to share information in order to receive it, but there are some things you should probably play a bit close to the vest.

Following the group stages, there will be a new mystery: Just who is Don Masters, what's his game, and how can he be stopped? That's a mystery for later, though, available to only our best detectives, and if might require some gettin' your hands dirty...

This Week's Theories

Theory One: patrickrowberry and attackfrog are in the same group (Cha0sFerret) - Incorrect.

The mathematician adjusts his glasses. That's the only sign of frustration that he shows, and just maybe it's not because he's really that frustrated. Bad data is bad data. He leans forward on the sofa, takes a gulp of water, and goes back to scribbling on his notepad. He's not much concerned with finding individual crooks as he is with busting this whole thing wide open. Given time, he's still fairly certain that he will.

Theory Two: patrickrowberry is not RPing for Morality (The_Angry_Goat) - Incorrect.

His first miss! The_Angry_Goat pretends to be annoyed. He dabs furiously at the spot of grape juice on his white pants. Still, the clever thing about that guess is that at least he now knows who is in cahoots with the Morality twins.

Theory Three: Sylandro is RPing for Wrecktangle (Hiicantpk) - Correct.

The larger picture is definitely starting to come into focus now. Hiicantpk makes further notes. He crosses things out. He rearranges pictures and paperclips a couple to some new dossiers. Gone is the 'too cool for you' suave attitude. The former cook is all business now. He downs the rest of his whiskey and pours himself some more. This is gonna be a late night, but that's nothing he's not used to, and he has a feeling that it'll be worth it.

Theory Four: patrickrowberry is RPing for Morality (Wolf5150) - Correct.

Wolf51-50 practically shouts it from the mountaintops. hey, sometimes life just lobs a nice easy floater right into your wheelhouse and you're almost obligated to crank out a home run. He'll take it. He quickly scribbles some notes, rearranges a few things and gets back down to work. For a second, he thinks he can hear mocking applause from the corner of the room where some of the senior detectives hang out, but he doesn't let it bug him.

Theory Five: Hiicantpk or The_Angry_Goat is RPing for GIVE YOUR MEAT A GOOD OL' RUB IV (Sylandro) - Incorrect.

Dammit! He'd even cast a wide net on this one, but Sylandro whiffs once again. he burns through his entire cigarette in one drag and lets out a hacking cough. Wolf51-50 just looks at him and shakes his head. Back to the drawing board, he supposes.

Theory Six: Wolf51-50 is RPing for Krieg (Badnik96) - Incorrect.

Badnik96 frowns and furrows his brow. That was not how he wanted to start this new case. He crosses out a couple of notes, on the precipice of being legitimately annoyed, so he decides to just stop, think, and drink. He pours himself some brandy from a nearby tumbler, scrawls another theory into his notebook, and closes it for a couple of minutes. It might be time for him to get some fresh air.

Theory Seven: Hiicantpk is RPing for Krieg (The Monsterworks) - Correct.

The Monsterworks gazes into his glass of scotch reflectively. He's not surprised that he got this one right. People have patterns, after all, and he studies people from here in his corner by the window. He smiles to himself and goes back to reading his magazine. Notes are for suckers.

Last Week's Theories

Theory One: The Monsterworks is RPing for Twirley-Coyote (Sylandro) - Incorrect.

Theory Two: Badnik96 is RPing for Hit'N'Miss (Sylandro) - Incorrect.

Sylandro has struck out this week. His cigar falls out of his mouth in surprise. He was so sure about at least one of those theories. He quickly bends down to retrieve it and shoves it back into his mouth to cover up his embarrassment. He takes a few good puffs. That's better! Maybe next week...

Theory Three: Jamied666 is RPing for Krieg (The Monsterworks) - Correct.

Theory Four: Badnik96 is RPing against Necroblade (The Monsterworks) - Correct.

The Monsterworks takes a particularly smug drag of his cigarette and gazes at his reflection in the windowpane. It's dark and rainy outside, and he usually tries to cultivate a brooding image, but he's positively ecstatic. Not that he'd ever let anyone know. He's convinced that he'll be the one to crack the case.

Theory Five: Madman is RPing for Twirley-Coyote (Wolf51-50) - Incorrect.

Wolf51-50 furrows his brow, scratches at his temple and rearranges some of his papers. It was a 50/50, this one. He takes a sip of brandy and crosses out a suspect. Maybe at least knowing who it isn't will help, but it still stings that the Coyote escapes yet again. From near the window, he catches The Monsterworks glancing in his direction, but the grizzled detective quickly looks away.

Theory Six: The_Angry_Goat is RPing for Hit'N'Miss (Badnik96) - Incorrect.

Theory Seven: Sylandro is RPing for Twirley-Coyote (Badnik96) - Correct.

It's a little bit disappointing that he was wrong about Hit'N'Miss, but overall, Badnik96 is pretty happy about his deductions. He's finally nabbed the wily Coyote and brought him to justice. That has to count for something. He takes a sip of his scotch, adjusts his hat, and goes back to typing away.

Theory Eight: NFX is RPing for Hit'N'Miss (patrickrowberry) - Incorrect.

patrickrowberry scowls as he watches his reflection in a glass of wine. He thought he'd finally pinned the creep down, but Hit'N'Miss escapes again. Dammit! Can anyone bring him to justice?

Theory Nine: NWOWWE is RPing for Hit'N'Miss (NFX) - Incorrect.

NFX lets loose with a rich string of curse words, but it's all under his breath. Only The_Angry_Goat and NWOWWE really notice much of anything. He quickly downs the rest of his glass of scotch to cover his souring mood. For such a slow, lumbering old lug, Hit'N'Miss has eluded capture for far too long.

Theory Ten: Madman is RPing for Hit'N'Miss (Wolf51-50) - Incorrect.

In frustration, the young detective sweeps his papers off of the coffee table. All of that work, gone! Useless! Goodfernuttin! He scowls deeply, hoping that his second failure has at least made a contribution. He's struck out for the week and needs to step outside for some fresh air. On his way out he passes The Monsterworks, and almost thinks he sees the ghost of a smug smirk cross the veteran sleuth's face.

Theory Eleven: Hiicantpk is RPing for Hit'N'Miss (NWOWWE) - Correct.

NWOWWE smiles, and most people think it's because he's happy about cracking what's proven to be one helluva tough case. He'll definitely be in for a bonus this month. Really, though, he's grinning at the naivete of some of his younger colleagues. While they've been tossing about their speculations with reckless abandon, he's been quietly observing here in this corner, while using this sham of a conversation as a front. The suave veteran allows himself a subtle but much enjoyed victory puff of his Cuban cigar.

Theory Twelve: Playzooki is RPing for Angry Goat II (patrickrowberry) - Incorrect.

patrickrowberry downs the rest of his wine in a single gulp and slams the glass down on the table. Wrong again! He was so certain this time! It had to have been playzooki! Who else has that kind of creative flair and gets so invested in what he's doing? Brooding, he stalks to the door, grabs his trench coat from the coat rack, and leaves the room.

Theory Thirteen: GF93 is RPing for Oni (NFX) - Incorrect.

This time, NFX doesn't swear under his breath. He tosses back the remainder of his scotch, jams his cigarette into the ashtray and with a gruff nod, picks up his leather briefcase and stalks out of the room, shouldering on his coat. Time for some hookers and gin.

Theory Fourteen: Wolf51-50 is RPing for Oni (Hiicantpk) - Incorrect.

Not really surprised - he figured it was a longshot - Hiicantpk twirls his pen a couple of times and flicks the cap off. That's about the only outward sign of frustration that he shows, and almost nobody here will recognize it as such. He crosses his legs, leans back into the soft velour of the sofa, and draws a smooth, forceful line through something in the folder he's holding. This guy is one cool cat.

Theory Fifteen: Mystic2000 is RPing for True Hero (Jamied666) - Correct.

Score one for the young guns, though Jamied666 has to admit that this one didn't exactly involve a ton of detective work. Sometimes lady luck smiles your way, he guesses. The young sleuth twirls his pen jauntily and whistles a little tune to himself as he struts over to the liquor cabinet and pulls out a fine cognac. There's a file waiting on his desk that just got a lot more interesting.

Theory Sixteen: NFX is RPing for Angry Goat II (Jamied666) - Incorrect.

Upon opening the folder, Jamied666's mood falls. He scowls into his glass of cognac. Still, it hasn't been a bad day. At least he's eliminated a suspect.

Theory Seventeen: Either Madman or Wolf51-50 is RPing for GIVE YOUR MEAT A GOOD OL' RUB IV (The_Angry_Goat) - Correct.

The_Angry_Goat takes a hearty bite of his sandwich and scribbles some notes on a paper. While others go for the homerun each time, he's more than content with a double base hit. Surreptitiously, he glances around this den of cigarette smoke and sin. A couple of others are watching him. He takes a sip from his juice box and the straw makes that suction sound that it does when it's almost empty. He tries not to grin. Right, back to work now.

Theory Eighteen: Madman is RPing for ' the Ainsley Harriot meme bot. It must've taken a huuuuge effort for him not to just go full meme with that.' (Killjoy) - Correct.

Killjoy only smirks, picturing in her mind's eye the effort it must've taken for her brother to contain himself. She crosses her legs, adjusts her dress, and writes a few more notes, all business.

Theory Nineteen: Playzooki is RPing for Final Boss (Hiicantpk) - Correct.

Hiicantpk is suddenly a dynamo of activity, crossing things out, rearranging other notes, and chewing on the back of his pen. He knew he was right about this one, and it definitely brings the larger picture a bit more into focus. He's not satisfied with these small deductions alone, though. He's aiming to bust this whole thing wide open.

Theory Twenty: patrickrowberry is RPing for Necroblade (The_Angry_Goat) - Correct.

The_Angry_Goat squeezes his juicebox so hard in excitement that a bit of juice squirts out and gets all over his nice white suit. It may have been an accident or it may have been intentional, some sort of ploy. You never know with that one, and even worse, you never know if he even knows either! Either way, as he gets up to go to the washroom and try to get this stain out, he's more than a bit cocky about going 2-0 this week.

It's time, to do some sleuthin'..

I've retrieved my arms from my chest, and i'm ready to rock n' roll.

--

Twirley-Coyote RPER - Probably The Monsterworks?

Hit N' Miss RPER - Someone very unenthusiastic about their bot, there's no spelling issues in sight, so pat's out of the game. It's a very short RP too, so i'm probably going to take a shot from the dark and say it's Badnik.

It's amazing what a simple search for a simple key word can do

http://s10.zetaboards.com/Drowning_City ... 8&e_y=2017

So it's not Monsterworks, who says this word quite a bit in his RPs as it does so in this RP for Twirly Coyote. That leaves Madman and Sylandro. Jamie and Badnik have somehow been uncovered already. But going back to this. While Syl is quick to RP at times, this is Laz's tournament, so he's bound to have the first right to RP. If I'm right, I'll give myself a pat on the back and be in my way. If not, I think I may have narrowed it down. You're welcome :v:

So, I believe that I have uncovered the mysterious driver of Coyote, or should I say, LAZARUS :V

My deduction about Jamie was based on the fact that he admitted to RPing for Krieg on Discord and then tried to backtrack. A sure sign of guilt. As for Dylan, his reaction on Discord was pretty noteworthy. Only RPING with/against a top contender or against your own design could produce something like that, and RPing against your own contending bot with another top contender makes this even more pronounced. To be honest, I was less than certain of that one, but I already had one sure bet, so I took a shot on that one and turned out to be right.

My first theory is that Gabe is the one RPing for Hit N Miss. It definitely looks like his kind of RP.

Second theory: Sylandro RPed for Twirley-Coyote. he's the only one i know who uses the phrase "matador him".

also here's better thread music

I don't know what it is about the Hit 'n' Miss RP that makes me think it's Josh.

But I think Josh is RPing for Hit 'n' Miss. :v: It must be that final sentence.
