2 Days on Rainier...
Earlier this week I did some trail hiking and ice climbing on Mt. Rainier. Rainier is an active volcano south of Tacoma, WA. It is over 14000 feet tall and has several adjoining peaks at lower altitudes. At 6800 feet no more trees grow due to oxygen deprivation, and at 7300 feet there are glaciers and snowfields year round. Here are just a few of the pics I took from my solo hiking trip this week.

A friend of mine just visited Mt. Rainier recently too. That second picture is very similar to one that he took. Breathtaking views.

Doing it all on foot sucks at first but once your legs get into the rythm and get warmed up it's all good. At higher altitudes you have to pace yourself more due to the lack of oxygen though. My favorite thing about it is that if you keep moving you stay warm, so even at elevations that have sub freezing temperatures you don't feel it. I was walking on the glaciers in a pair of thin nylon pants, a T shirt, and a fleece hoodie and still comfortably warm.

Damn right. I'd love to go someplace like that one day.

Oh my god John! Those pictures are amazing. Did you really get that close to a deer, or is that zoomed in? I especially like the second one from the first post.

Yeah, the deer pic is that close. It's a National park so there's no hunting. Some of the deer will just walk right up to you.
